We lost the vac shift when they ceased imports of the MWB and SWB. That pic is the 1st Ive seen of a vac shift on a LWB
We also lost the auto in a 7* series at the same time.

The same vac pump that provides vac for the brakes. It runs off the timimg gear with the PS pump and fuel pump

They are not available to the general public in Japan (inc troopies). Ive yet to see a significant market that can get all models and trim levels.
That one's a mystery until Clint gives us a link

They are Japanese exports. The tray top and tow bar look very australian on the 79,some were imported from oz to Japan for enthusiasts and maybe this one has been converted to a vac shift.

I have this vac switch as a standard. And am very happy with it.
In high you have to press the switch to get 4WD as we all know.
In low 4WD is 'on' automatically because, when moving the lever to low, a switch on the transfer does the same as the 4H-switch does: engage 4WD.
I disconnected this switch on the transfer and now I have push the 4H every time I want 4WD, even in LOW.
Big advantage is that tight cornering is easier and during manoeuvring in tight spots (especially with a trailer) one can use LOW making it less harsh for the clutch.
Keep in mind though, that, if you are using LOW in 2WD-mode, ALL the power is delivered to the rear drivetrain only.
Another thing to keep in mind is to not forget to press the button when really needing 4WD in low

I guess its down to what the dealerships think they can sell. I liked the button as the manual shift in low range rubs against my leg.
At least a choice would be nice.

The tray and towbar have been modified since the 1st post when it was in Japan.
The timber tray has some benefits,a lot of the HJ75 had jarrah trays and steel sides.

yes mate that makes sense i wouldnt mind the button but it is really just much of a muchness does the same job
for the leg rubbing you know you could put a h151 box in your cruisers or get a hdj/fzj..79 there in a straight line

Its not that bad. Ill get a 105 when Im ready.
I thought the 78/79 used an extension on the t/case to make the shift lever come through the floor in approx the same place as the older type?
