A couple of problems I need help with

I have a HZj 78 with about 140000 km on the clock. I have never had it services, just sorted through things as they have come up.

I have had a heal and toe problem with the front right (I think) wheel, where if I hit a certain dip in the road, I get severe shakes through the steering wheel etc adn the wheel is really heel and toeing. I have to stop the car to sort it out. I was told it may be the wheel bearing being a little loose, and i have read a couple of forums (here) about it, but I cant refind them.

To tighten the wheel bearing a touch, can i do it with the brake calliper still on? I have the 55 mm socket so, I am ready to go, just want some advice.

Second. The car has developed at certain times a rattle sound. It can be at various revs and apparently comes from either under the rocker cover or the fuel pump. I have tried hard to narrow it down further, with no success. Is there anything to vibrate in the fuel pump? When I rev the car up, sometimes it stops and stays away for ages or for thirty seconds. Most of the time, it knockes for 30 or so seconds and then goes quiet.

it sounds like socket in the empty metal glove box for want of better description..

Any help on either problem and a direction to the affore mentioned forum post woudl be appreciated.

the dreaded Death Wobble... scary shit eh?
do a search under death wobble and catch up...

If the wheel bearing is loose ,you would be able to feel the play by grabbing the top and bottom of the wheel and shaking it with it off the ground.

I had a steering wobble like that and it needed some shims but bad tie rods ends can also cause it.
The steering shops here call it bump steer

The rattle.
Have you taken the timing belt cover off,maybe the idler is on its last legs or the spring is loose.
I think the timer piston in the fuel pump can rattle also. You will be up for a few $$$ if so.

I guess the steering damper will also be shot by nowcheck out your wheel BRG's and ball joints for movement as Rossco said give her a wobble!!
check out all the idler pulleys with all belts removed

Thanks for the advice so far.

I have recently (20,000 kms) replaced timing belt idler etc so I hope thats not the problem.

I think when the front axle seals about k ago I didnt do the bearings right, but I will go through everything just to make sure.

And thanks for the direction to the death wobble.... I knew I had read it somewhere..

check the shokies as well and also make sure the spring ubolts are tight. i was getting the wobble aabout a year ago, would happen after i hit a decent dip in the road. had to pull over it was that bad. turned out to be the ubolts on one of the springs that i had replaced a while ago were pretty loose. but any looseness in any of the suspension and steering components can cause a wobble, also the castor being out.

my money is on the steering stablizer... and some aftermarket units are junk at the install so if it remains then it still could be. the steering stabilizers i USED to get from 4 wheel were crap, the newer ones they sell are better...

Hey Roscoe says the above. I am after where the shims might be? I have checked my bearings are good, so I am thinking shims or ball joints.

How hard is it to service or adjust them?

I havent really studied the coil sprung models but I cant see it being too hard. I take mine to a shop for these adjustments so its done right
In this list is some manuals for the 80 series which I think has a similar front axle and suspension to yours.

The steering stabilizer can also cause this. If it has a flat spot like a worn shockie,then it needs replacing. A good stabilzier can hide small problems so you still need the castor checked
