Info on LJ78 models...

My attention was recently shifted to the 4DR Prado LJ78 as my BJ60 on WVO is now a write-off.

My first consideration is to import a clean FJ60 and transplant a turbo diesel....

First:

What is the difference between lj78w, lj78g, & lj78 EX5

FAQs yielded little help & IH8MUD Wiki had nothing.

Are they a surf in LC clothing (ie. light duty)

Perhaps another website is more appropriate for researching.

Cheers,
-Armer

do a search under LJ78 , 2LTE.. lots of reading on this site.

great trucks, wicked off road, comfortable, but the engines are shit, time bombs and expensive to fix.

word to the wise, never invest money that you can not afford to loose.

it is not a matter of "if" the engine will die...it is "when" will it die... never in your driveway.

the engine is gutless, poor fuel economy, and crappy cooling system.

feel free to contact me at wayne@luxuryimports.ca and i will give you further info on the testing we have done with the engine to try and extend it's pityful life.

I could see lots of tech info but searched for hours on model info with no luck.

Perhaps I will reconsider though there are two available in my area for <$8000.

E-mail sent.

Any other feed back on model info?

Cheers.

Wayne hates them, lots have had head problems, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't had a problem with them.

Allright on fuel and a bit gutless, but otherwise no problems, you now have the option of the larger KZ motor in the 1993 model years

LOL!!
"never invest money you can not afford to loose"

if a unit has a 90% failure rate i would say you have a 90% chance of loosing your money (i.e. a money pit)
in my opinion 25 mpg on a good day is not alright on fuel espc since the HZ gets better fuel mileage on a bad day.

the KZ is not recieving much better reports in other parts

i would have to admit i loved the LJ78 off road... it is just depressing that the engine has such a weakness in an otherwise perfect rig...

Haha, I love how any post regarding a prado eventually degrades into a discussion on how its gonna blow up...

any prado i've ever come across in Canada has been an EX5, i've never heard of the other model designations you've mentioned.

Basically ,yes. They are using a heavy duty body with an altered front and the drivetrain from the Hilux/4runner/Surf range.
The engines were ok till they added a turbo

Still though like the other guy, I've owned my mine for over two years and 60,000kms later and she still rattles along without any problems except for the rad.

If the engine ever goes I'm putting the 4 liter V8 in her

A 1KZ T would be a nice swap

nah, a PZ or HZ swap would be nice but then why not just buy an 81 and be done with it...

I'm guessing that a PZ or HZ costs twice as much as the 4 liter.
and won't make near the power, also on the fuel aspect the V8 is very efficient.

i looked into the V8 swap when the head died on my wirfes wheeling rig and since i am not the greatest (or even like) elec i passed on the idea...
there is a wicked thread on a Toyota V8 swap into a 4runner, lots of info, step by step installation...i just can not find it right now...
