tranny cooler in rad

Ok the other day after some long hill climbs in four high my tranny light came on and the fluid temp was at 270 f. The PO had installed two small tranny coolers. So I thought this would be adequate. But here is my question. Is there in radiator heat exchanger on hzj73 with a a440? Because I don't see one on mine. The lines look like they go directly to the two small coolers in front. Where do the lines usually go on the rad?

the one mistake many installers make is bypassing the tranny cooler in the actual rad... you should have a small hose in and out at the bottom rear of the rad...

With the A440 or A343 or any automatic depending on the grade it is always better to use 4lo when climbing, it is alot easier on the transmission unless the speed is above 20km/h (less slipping and sluffing). Dump the two small coolers and get one big one, less connections = less things that can go wrong

well thats what I did, I dropped her in to 4 low and the temps would stay around 200 f. And I was planning to install one big cooler also. But really I'd like to do it to the excess, so I don't have to worry about over heating the tranny again.

Ok so I looked at the rad there are no connections for the transmission lines. What gives did some one swap or a manual tranny rad in to the cruiser.

There is a tranny cooler that drag cars use - it's more of a heat sync, I bought one for a guy - not sure if he installed it - do a search for tranny coolers in the 70 and diesel section and you will find it. Best thing is it can be placed anywhere - doesn't need to be in front of the rad - you can mount it anywhere underneath your truck.

Well, I was thinking of putting a heat exchanger in from the power steering off a corvette, or a oil cooler from a nascar. Opting for the nascar one because its bigger but not sure if I got the room. It looks like there is some room between the lower rad hose and the engine along the frame rail for this. the corvette one would be no problem, just not as much heat displacement capacity. They are both about 12 inches long.

Probably,7* series autos are not common with a 1HZ ,so the radiators are probably expensive and hard to get outside of Japan.

There are a few other things you might want to consider as well.

Get the correct rad from Japan, so you have the built in cooler.

Read the archives in the 3FE list on Yahoo for Rodney and Wholesale Automatics. This site also has a fair bit of discussion as well on transmissions, heat, and Rodneys advice.

Consider installing a Wholesale Automatic Extreme valvebody. Supposed to assist with a cooler running transmission. Gives 3rd lockup and shifts much crisper.

Consider running syth ATF. Amzoil or Transynd are two names that keep popping up.

What brand are the two external coolers. All are not created equal from what I understand. We've got a TRU-Cooler in front of the rad, in Petra's A440.

the cruiser came with this setup from Japan. The two cooler are JMO they are good in the way that they are durable no small fins to get bent, but the cooling ability is probably compromised. I was fitting one large cooler yesterday, when I went to crank one of the fittings that was leaking a bit it cracked. That cooler was all aluminum, after that I didn't want some thing that fragile on the front of my truck (oh I know everyone will love this, but it was a ford 150 tranny cooler, thats what I get for using a ford part). The correct rad would be nice, but the cost maybe really high. Perhaps fitting a custom after market rad would be cheaper and better, like be cool, or griffin. Although that wouldn't just bolt in so... I'm still thinking of the external heat exchangers.

I'm running regular ATF, I just dropped the pan and cleaned it along with the filter, and flushed the tranny. I also took the coolers and flushed them with solvent. The solvent would come out dark, almost black. I guess that was burnt fluid. Although the fluid that came from the tranny was bright red and didn't smell burnt... but then again all ATF smells funny to me

I did check out the valve body and torque converter, upgrades, they sound great, a bit pricey. There on my long wish list.
