Towing with a 70 series
What is the rated towing capacity of a BJ70? Being a relatively short wheelbase I wonder how it would do with a loaded car trailer. Assume a properly set up tandem axle trailer with both axles braked and a properly distributed load. Total trailer and load weight of about 7000lbs. I know this is probably pushing the limits of prudence but would like to go with the shorter wheelbase if possible as this would be a daily driver (fuels isn't going down in price).

7k lbs would be pushing it in my 100 series. I wouldn't even consider towing that much in my 70.

considering the 70 series rear frame is very close to the old 40 series with simialr spring rate and rear axle then, according to Dougal, you should be fine pulling 8000 lbs with your SWB 70...
personally, i think you are nuts to consider 7000 lbs behind a SWB. the tongue weight rating is 370 kg or 770 lbs max so at 15% of the trailer weight being over the tongue your max safe "tongue weighted' is 5000 lb trailer. and i still wouldn't consider that much... the strain on the rest of your drivetrain will be excessive... an HDJ81 struggles with 5000 lbs and my recommendation to the customers is no more than 3500 with the 81... with the 70 SWB i would recommend no more than 2500 lbs if it has the HZ in it. with the 3B i wouldn't recommend more than 1500 lbs.... but then <see sig line> |

You can pull a couple of sleds, 2 ATV's, some dirt, a small boat with a 9.9 evinrude, some furniture to go to college, some cruiser parts etc., like Wayne says 1500, or even less depending on how yo like to slow traffic down on hills in 3rd gear. Pulls 1000 comfortably.

I tow little trailers all the time behind my 70, and previously behind my old bj40. 7k pounds is nuts.
I was towing a ute trailer full of parts, probably weighed 3 or 4 thousand, no problem, slow on hills, and then , some dumbass cut in front of me and slammed on their brakes when a light went yellow. I'd just finished doing a 4wheel disc conversion the week before, otherwise, there's no freakin way I could've stopped that thing. as it was I damn near pushed him into the intersection. I have a 2k trailer in my drive right now, with a 6k boat on it, used my 70 to get it in the driveway as it's too tight a turn for the fullsize. starting on a hill with that load was barely doable in LOW RANGE ! then stopping, at the top, it actually started to skid down the hill with the brakes locked up. Not something I'd want to experience with traffic around. I towed that load across the states with an F350 dually, and it bogged down in the mountains, the 70 just couldn't do it. So yeah, good little tractors for moving heavy trailers around the yard, but for the highway, a couple thousand is enough. __________________ I disagree. 87BJ70 BJ55,Solihull Aluminum Body Kit, Wasp Farm. |

Thanks for the responses everyone..kinda what I expected...Well I've always had more trucks than brains so it looks like a tow rig is in my future plans somewhere down the road.

it's fishing time!
|
i tow a 3000# sail boat/trailer, the trailer has surge brakes. the 74 tows this setup quite well [50kph on long steep hills], it's the maximum weight that i would tow with a 74.
