13-BT Factory playmate

Hi guys,
I normally hangout in the 40 series area and with the diesel heads however I have a question that you 70 series guys should know off the top of your heads. I am doing a restore of my BJ40 while living overseas. My original plan was to swap out the B engine and H41 transmission for a 13BT and an H55f, thereby adding more horsepower and boost, making this rig something that can drive on the highway as well as the trail. However the cost of shipping the engine and tranny here just prohibitive and I shelved the idea until I return to the States. A visit to a local salvage guy today reopened my plan of to swap. He can have the engine in a week but was not sure about the H55f. Part of the problem is how the trannies are inventoried in the warehouse. He catalogs them based on year and model of vehicle not part number as that is how he gets them in the container from Japan. He has lots of transmissions and in really good shape but he only knows by year. Question From the CruiserFAQ section 5.5 th 13-BT ws originally on a 70 series cruiser from 87-89 ( 84-90 in Japan) and under section 8.1 the H55F basically was used from 83 onward to maybe 90. But under engines listed as being combined with the H55F no mention of the 13-BT on the chart. I know that I have seen the two mated in real life but did the 13-BT and the H55f ever come together from the factory?

You need a H55f with the 21 spline shaft and I think the shaft is the shortest of all the H55f.
Dont confuse it with a 1HZ gearbox which also has 21 spilines but longer.
You can also use any H55f that was mated to a 3B.

Most of the aussie 13BT had a H55f but most of the Japanese models were auto.
The H55f is still in production for some markets but for other engines.

Does the H55f have a marking or die stamp on it anywhere that designates it as an H55F and even better the spline count? If not how can you tell other than just counting the splines?

No marks that Im aware of . Im surprised your supplier cant tell one from another though.
Can he find a gearbox from a BJ73?

That is why I asked the question here. I just met the guy yesterday. Although what I saw yesterday was promising, we are still in the feeling each other out phase. As part of that, I wanted to know if there was in fact a way to tell one from another. If there was and he didn't know it that would tell me somthing about him and vice versa. I suspect that his bills of lading and invoices are vague for customs duties purposes but I probably won't find that out until I know him a lot better.
Do you have a part number for the gear box? Once I can see a thorough description I can translate it into Spanish better.

I am pretty sure just about all of the 70 series from 84 to 91 that had a manual had the H55F and that would work with the 13B-T. If you are looking for Crusiers with the 13B-T I think it originally only came with the BJ74 series from 88-91 then it went to PZJ or HZJ in 91.

To find the one I would count the spine you can tell a H55F from H41(2) because it has an extra section about 4 inches between back of tranny and transfercase, once you see one you will be able to spot them.

There are also H41 and H42 4 speed transmissions that come with a split transfer case and the spacer mentioned above. The thing to look for is a lever on top of the spacer that is connected to a shaft from the shift tower. This lever controls 5th gear.

Without the lever its just a 4 speed with a spacer
