I was at an 4X4 club twist off today, tried my truck on the ramp, got an RTI of 508, not even close to the suzukis but it was fun to do. Limiting factors - front tires stuffing into the coil spring towers. More than enough articulation for me though.
Sweet build, me and the boys have watched your videos at lunch time in the shop.

yep, that is the beauty of real life experience...
sometimes there is no other way.

over the decades i have watched fads come and go, cure-alls disappear because it really wasn't a cure for the problem. i have watched the V8 fad fade away and have seen the diesel phenomenom blossum.

of course out of all this some great ideas have emerged and have remained (and some real goofy ideas die nasty, ugly deaths)

that is a good looking rig Louis, keep up the thread with trip reports and mods... i know i enjoy them.

cheers M8

Great little video, Ishobie. Makes me wish I had the money and could figure out how to get a HZJ75 or 79 pickup into the states.
Question on the Air Compressor set up: Where did you get the Air/Water Separator? I would like to get one for mine, but I can't seem to locate one. Don't have much of a problem with freezing here in Hawai`i, but plenty of humidity to get turned into water in your lines.

I got mine with a plasma cutter that I bought. But they are pretty common, try an auto supply shop or auto paint supply shop - they should have one. Or ebay??

Thanks! Was a pretty mild year for wheeling my truck, mostly experimenting on all the things I've done to it. I had to take it easy as my tranny and transfer is just about ready to explode New ones going in this winter - then I get to flog the crap out of it next spring.

Regards,

Louis

LOL, cute little truck! Bait casted - no bites here I am probably done for the year, I have to order my new tranny/transfer from dave before I get into anything serious, I've been taking it easy on both because they are on the verge of collapse, lots of noise, rattling, bearings, pinion slop etc etc - so can't go too nuts with it. This spring will be good though, should have it all done by then.

Nikland, thanks very much, very kind words! I am glad you check my videos out - I will be producing some better videos in the near future. The 8 inch differential in my truck had a very hard life in the underground mines, it has about 2500 hours of use and always in 4x4 low gear - so it was worn out and I needed a new one. So instead of buying a new toyota differential I just bought an ARB locker and installed it with new bearings and ring and pinion gear. I have never broken it, next year it gets a real test - I suspect I will break the cv joint (birfield) first

Regards,

Louis

Yes it is a good idea, but you run into alot of problems - alot of fabrication would have to be done - or you have to lift the truck very high. The high pinion was used and the tie rod was used behind the diff - if you try to put in front then there is no place for the front panhard link - and the 9.5 inch diff comes in contact with the oil pan - so you have to lift high. Also, the 8.5 inch on my truck has the newer larger brakes - I love them and they work way better than the older smaller brakes of any other cruiser so I did not want to lose them.

I think the 8.5 inch front end with ARB locker, bigger bearings, and smart drving there should never be a problem. I only put about 10,000 kms on my truck a year so this should last me for as long as I own this truck.

What year is your HZJ71?

Louis

ummm, the 8" is just as strong as the 9.5 as long as it isn't an open diff. the casting of the actual crown retainer/mount is very thin... if it is an elec locker than theya re just as strong as the 9.5.
(i think i said that already)
the smaller diff has better ground clearence, larger birfs than the older style front.

in reality, i will run either in my trucks...

how many mini truck front diffs have you SEEN grenaded?

I have heard that they are not as strong when under load in reverse. And yes only real problems I ghear of are fom mine use and open diffs, I suspect that the diff in my truck was atleast the second one and was completely worn out - I know it was the second as there is major damage inside the axle housing from a diff grenading. Same goes for the birfields on my truck, they weren't original as I can see where the exploded and chewed up the housing. But - they were in mine use so that speaks for itself. The birfs are as big as the 80 series birfs and are bigger than older 70 series birfs. Axles are the same size though.
