Prado exhaust
I came across this add on ebay for a sebro side sport muffler the prado. Looks nifty, simpler and a little cheaper than a custom 2 inch.
Might be worth a look if you are considering new exhaust. __________________ Kevin Smithers, BC 91 LJ 78 |

For what that is, you could make one with parts pretty easy. A couple glass packs and a straight pipe... You could do it for a hundred bucks at Canadian tire...

Just wondering... BB - if I guy was to use the canadian tire version of this muffler, I would guess it would just be bolt on? any downfalls to this... Might be worth trying to do the muffler myself to save, I dunno... 1000 bucks!

I've got an under the rocker mounted glasspack/bottle with side exit on my 3B equipped 70. Sounds like S%@T. IME baffled bottles sound worse though. I picked up a similar sized bottle at Peavey Mart recently with separate perforated inlet and outlet chambers for 30 bucks...hopefully won't sound like a mufflerless Tercel anymore.

would it make sense (or work rather) to clamp so i could instal it then get the unit over to a welder friend I have to tack it up?...
maybe a dumb question but I'll ask anyways! I am thinking to try the glass pack version of theis stebro model and poke it out before the back tire - short and straight(ish) would I connect to the manifold then?? (yah, I havent done any muffler work before... if it wasnt painfully obvious!) |

Whole pipe is stainless steel, homemade
3" downpipe, painted with black satin ![]() And rest ![]() ![]() ![]() Also tube headers, intercooler and better turbo installed. |

what did you use for the 'muffler'
I am thinking I just may use straight pipe but I am not sure if the noise will be too much... anyone tried this?? |

If I was to do this myself, I am thinking about joining to the old pipe after it has come down from the manifold (at the bolt together joint, after the tight bend) cut it there and weld on the new 2.5" section to the the back tire (4' or so).... (come out if front like the stebro.. or yours Axel - Nice job by the way!)
Would this work? No Muffler??? Last edited by Tebo; 02-07-08 at 08:35 PM. Reason: spelling |

The turbo acts as a silencer so might be OK. Worst case scenario, you do it, it's too loud, you left enough room to splice in a resonator or glasspack.

Thanks again! you think I would be ok to attach to the old pipe at that joint, basically where the pipe starts back down to chasis??

Right on... nice and simple (similar to a resonator...)
Very cool man, Thanks for the help... Oh, how does that sound?? Better than a glass pack I would suppose? |

I've been down this road a few times. My $.02, resonator/baffled bottles sound like crap. Raspy, loud, sounds like each detonation is broken into a million high pitched raspy loud detonations. I have a resonator that you can have for free if you want to pay greyhound shipping collect. I have a glasspack on my 70. With glasspacks you get the muffled sound of each cylinder firing at low rpm's. At high rpm's they sound like crap too, especially when they start to pack out. Either way, it'll never sound like a V8. On our 77 I managed to squeeze an oval flopro under the rocker with side exit behind the back door. It hangs down a bit under the running board but is quiet with minimal exhaust tubing. This is our family wagon and will never get hung up on the rocks. I kiddie locked the drivers side door so our daughter won't step out and burn herself on hot days. Again just my $.02, others will disagree. If you want pics let me know.
Edit...Axel's muffler looks super long so probably sounds different from what I've used |

Huh... sure getting a variety of opinions with this one! I really have no idea...
Will the glass pack make it louder than just straight pipe... I mean I suppose like you said before the best option might be just to go straight pipe and cut in a muffler later if its too loud... You could build a long 'resonator' type thing like axel's for the full length of the run along the running boards. You serious about the resonator? I am in Calgary... I mean truthfully I have NO idea what they sound like either - your description dosent sound too horribly apealling though!! :-) Thanks for the input for sure though... |

I think I am going to try staright pipe from that connection after the down pipe from the manifold... get that pretzel of a muffler out of there and see how that goes... I'll get fancy from there later if need be...
Start with the simple and cheap plan first!... Hey Twothirty, did you start new right from the manifold like axel or connect further down the exhaust pipe?? |

Glasspack will be marginally more quiet than straight. I left the stock dump pipe, unbolted and removed everything behind the flange that resides behind the driver's side front wheel. Cut the flange and small stub off the junked portion of exhaust system and went custom from there back. Re-used the hanger bracket under the drivers door and fabbed another just before the pipe exits in front of the back wheel. I keep forgetting that you're turbo'd. I've heard straight piped 12ht's that sound good. Wish I could help more but I've got zero personal experience with 2lt's. For real on the resonator....freight via greyhound would probably be around $20. $30-$40 to buy one new. Or I might be headed back that way in a week or two.

Awesome,
Thanks so much for all your help. Ok, I think I will try staight for now and see what it sounds like with the turbo. If it's not so good I will cut in a resonator... this all sorta sounds like plumbing - and that I can do... so, heres hoping! Thanks again. T |

you might want to check out the aeroturbine mufflers. They supposedly sound great and create suction using a non active airfoil which results in major exhaust temp drop (150 degrees) They are lifetime guaranteed and look great to boot.

...One more thing. Is it possible to install 3 inch exhaust from the turbo all the way back on the prado?

likely not unless its body lifted as it is very tight in areas leading all the way to the back

did mine on the weekend 3 in inlet and outlet, but the guys at the exhaust shop wouldn't go 3 in from the turbo down, they said there wasn't enough room, so just behind the front tire its 3 in and exits just in front of the rear tire.
Honestly it made a marginal improvement I was expecting more, as the stock exhaust is so restrictive. One thing I noticed right away is that it runs 10 degrees cooler and doesn't hardly budge on long hard hills. Also it still surges at full boost full load, I'd like to get rid of the electronic part of the fuel injection, it just doesn't seem to know what to do. Hit a boost spike of 20 today also, really surprised me. |
