Well, it you don't use mandrel bends then you will be down to 2.5 inches which is still good - but not as good as 3 inch mandrel. Lots of welds aren't bad. There is a guy in town here with 3 inch stainless, and I can get the mandrel bent j pipes if you need them in stainless or regular steel.

I'm still too busy and have tons of other things to do first but you sure make it very tempting for me to let everything go and just get to your place and get things done there...

Nope, the frame on the BJ-7x is different, there is no channel cross member for the pipe top go over.

Besides the problem with the pipe in the picture is not the diameter, it's the kink that nearly closes the pipe off. Nothing works right if it's not maintained.

That kink is common to all HDJ81s AFAIK. Martin White had the exact same problem, and was told by ATEB they were all like that. Nothing to do with lack of maintenance or some other sort of problem, it's apparently by design.

In any case redoing the exhaust solves the problem. Why am I not surprised...

in the picture posted the exhaust pipe is clearly KINKED about half closed, and I doubt if it comes from Toyota like that. It comes with a smooth bend, but it's obvious in the pic that someone backed up against something and kinked the pipe, then part of the end rusted of. Clearly a maintenance issue. The design isn't all that great, I'll admit, and I'm glad they didn't do that design on the 7xs.

No kidding John, I just simply can't find the link to this. I'm am sure Martin White reported ATEB as saying it was a factory restriction.

I know it sounds weird, but I remember that very clearly. Something to do with limiting torque.

Whats the correct model number for these new cruisers? At a dealer I saw one with stickers on the windscreen calling it a 79 Series (however I had a 79 series for work and it was the old shape and 6cyl turbo)

This thread is titled 71 Series, but I have a brochure from Toyota naming it the 70 Series (however the swb isnt featured, only the tryaback, wagon and troopy)

Only a handfull of markets still get a SWB 70 or 71 series. The one signifies a turbo version in some years and in others it means coil front and the new one has both, well so did the previous model.
The ones pictured above are ME models and not usually diesel, maybe they are dropping the old 1FZ FE.
Makes me wonder if the 7* series will ever see a V8 petrol

The V8 cab chassis is still a 79 series although the dealers are referring to all the new V8 models as the 70 or 79 series depending on who is talking.
(there is no longer a body plate with all the details on the firewall)

Much of the confusion is caused by the fact that since 1984 all the numbers from 70-79 have been used up.
They should have released the new models with a alphabetical suffix to signify it is from new generation of 7* series.
Make the most of them as I believe this will be the last model. With OHS laws becoming more stringent, it will probably be compulsory to have airbags and Toyota have already stated they cannot be fitted to a 7* series.

Personally I cant see them dropping the line completley, there is just too much need for vehicles of this sort... Nissan have no problems fitting airbags to the Patrol, and Toyota fit them to the 100... Its just a case of a major redesign to incorporate airbags.

I know where I work, there is no other option for what we do, other than a toyota troopy, without heavily customising another full chassis 4wd (deffender/patrol)

Would be nice to cut the resonator open to see what the restriction was!

I dont think the end of the 7* series is imminent but it wont go on forever. By then there maybe something in Toyotas line up that can replace it.

Because everyone looked at the SWB Patrols and the Pajeros and thought the Landcruiser SWB and MWB overpriced by $5-$10K.
The MWB in 1988 was $33K,about the same price as a 380 SEL Mercedes in oz and the dollar was worth something like 50c USD
When they are in the showroom all shiny and smelling so good ,no one looks underneath to see what they are made of,no one looks 10-20 years down the track.
