G'day all

Wondering if anyone has swapped some 60 series complete diffs under a 70series? rear and or front? Its just something i'm considering weather it can be done while retaining the springs etc in the original spots.

Or should I just got ahead and get my custom rims made with a extra 25mm ish offset

cheers

??
are you talking differentials, axles or rims?

the pumpkin between a 60 series and the older 70 series are interchangable.
the axles are not. the rims are.

He's talking about swapping the whole axle under the truck. The rear is easy to do. The front would take a little bit of work iirc.

This is what lowenbrau is doing in his Expedition build up. Check in there and you will see what he had to do to his front axle to make it work. You could always outboard the springs too.
Cheers,

I have looked into this substanitally. I cant remember specifically where I saw it on the net maybe it was here. Anyway. The 70 series axles are 50 mm wider than 40 series and 60 series are 100 mm wider than 40 series. So in reality over 70 series axles 60 series are a total of 50 mm wider. 5 cm is only 2 inches. To me it was not worth the work to outboard the springs which is necessary since on the 60 series it is only the drivers side axle which is longer, the passenger side 60 and 70 are the same. If you can afford it swap in 80 series axles with coils.

Using that logic one should never ever consider putting 6* series axles under a 4* series either, as the 4*/6*/7* all share the same right side axles...

If you are going SOA I would certainly put the 6* series axles under either a 4* or 7* if it suits your needs for extra width. 6* axles, SOA and bolt on spacers under my BJ74 is a consideration at some point. Coils/link would be nice, but using an 8* front axle would mean losing the 9.5" front diff.

You can relocate the perches, splitting the difference in width for both sides. The front axle is where you either locate the perch high (place on top of the axle tube as it curves up for the diff) or cut in, like Lowenbrau is doing on the 6* axles under a 7*. Any times I have heard of doing this swap is done the same time as going SOA.

Hulsty does not mention if the increased width desire is from going SOA or not.

Anyone ever seen a 4* or 7* with 6* series axles in SUA configuration?

thats exactly what I wanted to know mate, so its the long side thats longer, not a little bit each side. So the springs would be to close the pumkin then if i didn't outboard them. Oh well was a nice idea. I'll just get some rims custom made instead to fit my rubber. thanks all

cheers

Some owners have fitted the 10 inch Nissan Patrol diffs under there, coils and all;)

burbankianfj45wagon has 62 axles under his 45LV. It was sprung over and now it is back sprung under.

I have 62 axles under my 45 but I am SOA. Both burbankianfj45wagon and I have outboarded spring hangers. Hope that helps.

I've done my BJ74 with 60 axlesin a Spring Over config. Shaker used 60 series axles sprung under on the front of his BJ42. Four link in the rear. Neither truck has outboarded springs. Both have the housing modified to suit.

I'm running 1.5 inch spacers on my '40 right now to get the tire clearance from the frame and springs. Steering effort is very high with the 18 inch wide boggers. Especially when locked. With the same setup, minus spacers, steering effort is much lower. I'll be switching to an FJ60 front axle as soon as I can fit the project into the schedule. Notching the housing is the way to go IMHO. Outboarding the springs eliminates my reason for swapping.

Mark...

In the right picture, where's the U of the U bolt closest to the centre?

NO u-bolt there. Its tapped with reinforcement into the housing. The trouble with running a wide axle on a narrow spring spacing is that you can't use an inside u bolt because the third member is in the way.
