Welcome to the forum. The question for the engine is if it is a BJ engine or a LJ engine.

LJ is a 2.4L 2l-t
bJ 13b-t

Newbie from Portugal

Hi, All,
just a quick introduction, I have had my 1992 LJ78 for two years and bought it when I moved to the mountains of mid Portugal, 40c in summer and ice and snow in winter.
Have been through the whole 2LTE head problems and spent some £3K before solving the issue, now have worked with the solution for 10K kms and it's ok now.
I would very much like to find an operations manual for the vehicle, mines in Japanese.
Regards,
Chris Yates-Smith.

Welcome to the board. A cruiser wagon makes a great family vehicle. Check out the 80 series trucks too.

hey

Just wanted to say hey. Been a Prado owner now for 2 years now. Picked it up in Okinawa, and brought it to Korea. Hopefully, I'll figure out a way to bring it back to the states. I'll post some pics and more info on my baby later. Looking for a lot of help now as she's been acting up lately.

Hi; I'm Kevin, based in Smithers British Columbia.

I purchased a 91 Prado 7 months ago. It now has just over 100,000 km. Pretty standard unit with the 2LTII engine. I just went through the head replacement route, caused by a leaky radiator that I didn't get onto soon enough; expensive lesson.

Interestingly enough, my unit performed fanstatically on a northern hunting trip with three guys, two canoes, a travel trailer loaded with a moose on the return trip; lots of weight including a pretty demanding trip up an old mining road that degenerated into a creek while still towing my trailer. Very fun.

I'm now installing a pyrometer and better water temp guage and will monitor temperatures under heavy loads before deciding if I need to upgrade the exhaust or rad.

Recent experience was a problem with an aftermarket mechanical oil pressure guage that burst after 200km. Turns out it burned through; too much heat and maybe not routed properly (I had Toyota do it). I now put in an electrical guage which works fine. This came close to costing me an entire engine, but I shut down before running out of oil. I wonder if the hot engine has caused similar problems with anyone installing aftermarket oil guage.

I have learned lots from the forum, so appreciate the efforts here, and will contribute where I can. Looking forward to learning more.

Hey Kevin, welcome to the forum. I am also in Smithers. so is a few others on here.

Please post up in the registry with a pic. Cheers, I'll have to look out for your rig. Also go in the jdm alliance section here on mud. It is down in the TLCA sections. They are fighting the proposed legislation to the change in import laws. They need support.

Yes, XZL but these are retreads, the new XZL's are very hard to get.
I found a firm here in Holland that uses the old xzl tyres to vulcanize a ne treath on them, for more info see http://www.aircrafttyres.com/900r16_...elin%20XZL.htm

Hi Tonito, well as a fellow BJ driver i can give you some tips...
the header came from Genie exhaust in Australia. As you probably know an atmospheric motor has to get it's air as easy as posible, so i took a BIT snorkel (from All American Imports in the netherlands) witch has a good flow, and made the conection straight into the aircleaner box from there trough a 80 mm pipe true a 2H(HJ60) intake valve into the inlet manifold. so on this side no obstruction. then i took the pump of and gave each delivery valve 30% more fuel to the injectors. the governer spring is swapped with one of a Merc. 300GD (longer and less stiff) governer so you can regulate the boost better.Turn out the maximum speed screw about 2 windings (in a 3b you never reach the maximum rpm) the injectors are normaly adjusted to about 120 barr but i put them on 150 bar so the injection is more dense, ( the pump can handle about 500 barr) .
when the mixure burns it leaves the building trough the header into a 80 mm cherry bomb and straight out (right hand side of the car).

Some tips i learned trough the years, always use the original red toyota coolant, don't use synthetic oil , keep your stationairy on at least 800 rpm so you have better oil pressure at low revs. And love your rig!

Regards
Mike

Hi Traveller,

is your genie-header especially for the 3B oder the one for the 3.0Ltr. B-engine - I only found a header for the B in the genie-program.
I didn't know that the 3B is an atmospheric engine, so a better airflow equals much more performance or is it only a litte?
What is the advantage of the 2H intake valve (so you revised your cylinderhead???)?
I think you have the inline injection pump, right? So i have to find out how to tune my rotary pump (or give it to a pro).
At last, how does the power feels like with the bigger exhaust (i lost mine once and there wasn't any torque) and the other mods?

thanks for your tips ...

New to forum

I just have acquired a 1990 HB-70 6 cyl deisel with 180,000km on it. There is something wrong with the motor, not quite sure what but I know it is not driveable. I can see that I will be calling on the wisdom of the members here to help me repair this fine machine. This place looks like a ton of fun to be on, I'm glad I found this site...again hello to all...thanks gk
