Have any of you 70 guys ever owned a 60 ?
i have been looking quite hard for another 60 and was planning on getting a decent one , but then i noticed that a decent 70 was for sale and started thinking that it might be an option as well , my only concern is that it will be my d.d. so i am wondering from some one who has driven both how much rougher the 70 is for a daily commute ?

i have driven many, the 60 inherently rides better due to the longer wheel base but with the proper suspensing mods the 70 can ride REAL nice. a bit softer tire pressure helps as well.
the 70 is no kidney buster like the old 40 series but if the suspension is "tired" then it will bottom out easily. remember they are both leaf setups so the ride will be close to the same. the 70 is much more nimble than the 60 but at the same time you loose the 4 doors and the cargo space... cheers __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! 70's are fun little trucks, incredible vision in them...kindof an amazing amout of glass for a small vehicle.
I owned a 60 briefly, ( it made a one way trip to my back field....) and I remember it being a fair bit more plush of a ride than the 70, but my 70 has some stupid front springs on it so I dont really see why they shouldn't be able to be just as smooth. as for storage space, yeah 60 has it beat there alright. I took the back seat outta mine, makes things a lot better, dog is happier, and he's more important than any second passenger

Toynut:
If you mean by a "70" my "74" ...then there's a bit of a wheelbase difference between the short wheelbase BJ70 and my medium wheelbase BJ74. You still don't get the 4 doors, but you gain some ride comfort and a LOT more rear cargo area without losing much of the nimbleness that Wayne is talking about. (Plus the turbo diesel makes the trip that much more comfortable. )Give me a call back on the number I PM'd you and you can come out and check it out on Saturday if you like. ![]() Stone __________________ Stone's Land Cruiser & Flyfishing Pics Flyfishing British Columbia: www.flyfishbc.com bcfishingreports.com |

I owned an fj 60 for a stint. It was my daily driver. From my perspective the 70 would make a fine daily driver. I don't think the 70 is any rougher due to short wheel base than a 60. Where I think the 70 shines is the vacuum assist brake and clutch. My 60 in stop and go traffeic with the clutch wore on my leg quite a bit. But I guess you have those things with a bj60 too. I consider the 70 a 2 seater. It's a pita to get anyone in the back except maybe small kids and there is almost zero cargo room if you have the seat. Otherwise I LOVE my 70.

I have both, a BJ70 and a turboed HJ60. They serve different purposes, IMO. I prefer the 70 as DD, and the 60 for long trips, due to the immense cargo room, and the much more powerful engine.
Not really comparable-many drive 60s as DDs, for me they are a little too big. personal preference... j __________________ turboed 84HJ60, in San Diego. |

mm I love to drive a 70 series with SO and huge tires, lockers, re-gearing winch and and and .. uff ! let me back to reality
For a trial ( one day trail or only mens trail ) rig .. awesome .. ! DD in stock ( whatever it means .. ) mmm good .. I love huge rigs .. I love the 80 series space and 60 series nice more .. when you plan a trip with your girl, nothing as space .. They need a lots of space to put in your rig all ( trustme all ) stuff that she can ! |

I had the 61 series for a short while at the same time as my 73 . My 73 and the 61 were both diesel 5 sp and had a 2 inch lift.
With the same seats ,steering wheel ,steering ,brakes, suspension they dont feel to much different. Occasionally I had to look around to see which one I was driving. The 60 is definately a better vehicle to ride in The SWB and MWB will go better off road when the entry and exit angles become important and easier to park . IMO,if the off road capabilities are not important ,get the 60 and enjoy the 4 drs and the extra cargo space. Im not sure I could live with a 70 series, just too small ,too short for my needs unless I wanted it for a trail rig ![]() Maybe I should get a troopy ![]()

2 different trucks in my opinion, one is great for a big family, the other for a small family. One is better suited for offraoding than the other ie.tighter spots and easier to maneuver.
I'd buy a bj74 over an bj60 anyday though. Regards __________________ Louis Check out my youtube videos at: www.youtube.com/lshobie Join the True North Toyota Land Cruiser Club in Ottawa http://landcruisers.ca/ |

this begs to question, what is a "men's only trail"? (i have yet to see a trail that a woman couldn't drive if she wanted to...) __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! 70 is a bit choppy on road compared to the 60 due to the shorter wheelbase. Not bad though, not bad at all. Depending on your other needs for the vehicle, I think you're on the right track to consider the 70. Not much acceleration, but then the 60 doesn't posess that either. The 70 makes a fine DD, IMO.

If you want to compare 60 and 70 series it must be done using the same engine or at least similar HP

Day to day driving, I'd get a MWB 73 or 74 series anyday. They have a good turning circle for a 4x4, are short(er), easy (REALLY) to park, drive over gutters if you need to and have EXCELLENT vision. The Diesel version is very good, but as always, they benefit enormously from a turbo. I don't know if you guys got the RV versions over there, but they're the pick of the bunch.
I drive a HZJ75RP ute every single day now and to be honest on the stock suspension, the ride is comparable to a 100 series. I don't feel a damned thing. Mind you the 75's are LWB. I've driven 60 series before and I found them hard to see out of, loud, uncouth and generally hard to turn. God forbid you have any tight parking lots, you need a small airfield to turn one of those things around. |

I've owned two 60's and loved them both. I've currently got two 70 series vehicles--a short and medium wheelbase. As far as I'm concerned the medium wheelbase leaf-sprung 73/74 ride as good as any 60/62 out there. And all I give up is two doors, as there is still quite a bit of stowage space.
Now with my short wheelbase 70, mine is not a good comparison as it has four-wheel coil-spring over sollid axles. The ride is superb. It's not fair to the 60 to compare.

With an OME or equivilant suspension, and the suspension seats that came stock on the Cdn 70's...you will not care if it is a 70 or a 60 imo. It will turn tighter, be more nimble in town and on the trail. If you are going to use it for camping, and such, then storage might be a concern...if you want to keep the back seats on the 70. If you want it as a two seater, turf the rear seats..and turn all that room into storage, then bobs your uncle. If you want to carry passangers and camp...then the 60 is your choice. hth's gb |

I have 2 kids and I need a roof rack for camping... but that not a problem for me. As a DD, the 70 is, in my opinion, better because the all around window. That vehicule can turn on a penny ! I easy to drive it in town. IMO, buy the 70 because you already have a 60 and you will enjoy the best of the 2 worlds ! Here, the 70 is a must... because it rare ! This is, afther all,... something you can think about !

The GQ Patrol is ver comfy indeed. Not so as a 80 series, but I have always stated that is not a fair comparison, since an 80 is a more expensive vehicule (20K more here in Panama). Nissan don´t really have a vehicule to compete with Land Cruisers. A Patrol is more between a 4Runner and a TLC...just my first 0.02 cents. |
