Wise ones...what model is this?
So a friend sent this to me and I don't know what model it is either. Obviously engine type is unknown but beyond that does anyone have an idea? The mirrors and absense of side vents (='s fuel injection?) say something beyond a 60. Swing out doors, sliding rear windows and split rear bumper place it as a Non-US model but it appears to be LHD. This is my dream rig, where do I start looking?

The highly coveted high-roofed (meaning it's more'n likely got rear A/C), ambulance door'd FJ62. Wasn't sold in the US (or even Canada I think, but I could be wrong on that). Pretty sure it still had the option of a 3FE or a diesel, and available PTO winch with extended front bumper (not in the pic). Not sure what the deal is with those running boards though. That's a new one on me.
BTW I've got those sliding windows, though they're not installed yet. Hopefully this summer...

Not JDM, likely Central America, General Market or could even be North Africa spec. Hi-roof *could* mean dual A/C but it doesn't necessarily have to, what it probably likely is hi-capacity seating (either through a third row, or drop-down jump seats in the back area -possibly the first, note no step in the rear bumper-).
From the front turn signals that's an -8/86 or newer truck, which means 3F, 3FE, 2H or 12H-T engines. I guess it could have a 3B, but in that configuration, unlikely.
It *looks* to be LHD, confirming one of the above options.

I have seen JDM HJ61s exactly like that here in Japan. Yes, the ambulance doors would make it a very rare and hard to find HJ61 but they do have them here.
You can also find JDM FJ62s with the high top roof. I can not confirm that you can find or can not find a j-spec FJ62 high topper with ambulance doors. I just have never seen one in person.
The high top on my HJ61 has niether rear A/C or drop down seats. The only thing my high topper roof provides is more cargo space and head room for the rear seat passengers. However, I do not have the ambulance doors either so this one might have the rear A/C and drop down seats.
I wouldn't hesitate to call that particular cruiser a HJ61 from the picture alone.

I have seen road test of HJ61s in Australia with the high roof option and a third row seat. Weren't some of them called "Sahara"s?

I have heard some of the Japanese guys call the high roofs "Safari roofs". I just call them "high tops" as it is easily understood want I'm talking about when speaking with cruiser guys here in Japan.

Yawn ...I got about 6 of them within a mile of my place
It has the sliding windows and I think Orstralia is one of the few countries to get them.(although I can see this one is LHD)
Its uncommon to have amby doors and high roof together .
The aussie models with amby doors are usually low spec and have 2H diesels or 3F carbed (unsmogged) and had single headlights until 1990.
Again from my observations ,the 12HT usually has a high roof and tail gate.
The Saharas were top of the range(still available) and avalable in a 2H ,12HT or 3F.
You could also get all 3 engines in lower spec GX cruisers .
The bottom of the range got only the 2H and 3F
We had no EFI in any 60-62 series
I believe only North American cruisers got the fender vents to aid cooling in the cramped and smogged LHD engine bay.
Calling them Safari roofs is probably confusing them with the high roofs on a Nisssan Safari/Patrol

I believe so but only on the lowest spec models.
To explain it better,Toyota kept making the 60 series for sale in some countries after the 62 was introduced

My 89 Fj62 GX has the 4 headlights,flat roof,3F carb.
I have seen JDMs both flat roof and high roof,2H,12HT,earlier models with 3B as well as the 3F like mine, auto or 5 spd, very little in the way of options as the VX.

You don't have to wait until 2014,the single headlight early models came out late 85,i have one, australia got the high roof models a few years before this also but they were fj's or hj's,no 12ht mtor until 85.
You have to be very careful when looking for one, very common in oz for the roof to be rusted out or on its way but there is good ones around, the JDM ones seem to be rust free.
I know a guy in our town that sold one about two weeks back for $5500,it was nice with only 250,000klms but had a little roof rust.

Wow, look at all the expensive **** in your sig line. Perhaps you should make the damned thing run, reliably, before dragging it thru an offroad catalog with a magnet attached! After all the work it took to install all that, I'd thinhk a couple of water leaks should be minor! ~ TEXX (IH8MUD member) 10/09
