| transmission wont engage greetings, i am new to the forum and want to take the opportunity to say hi. to al fellow cruisers...i live in montreal canada and have an 88 wagon (automatic) with the 4.0 litre gas engine... right now i am experienceing a transmission that wont engage. we got a lot of snow a couple days ago at which time i put the truck into 4 wheel drive to go through some which hadnt been ploughed yet... that was fine but when i pulled over short time later to go back into two wheel, i was stuck. i played with the wheel locks, and the 4wheel drive high low shifter a whole bunch but then had to have it towed. there were no strange noises or anything like that to report in fact i had drove over 4 hours in the storm that day to the mountain and back home using 4 wheel most of the time as the roads hadnt been cleared. the entire time she drove like a dream. it'd be great to hear from others that may have experienced similar problem or something before i go and try to find a new transmission which might be hard here as i brought my truck from the westcoast and montreal they are very scarce.
thanks & take care!

| The transmission would not engage back into drive or the transfer case would not come out of 4WD? Those are two different questions. If you could not come out of 4WD, then you probably just have some load on the transfer case keeping it in 4WD. Try backing up and then moving the lever into 2WD.

| Please explain more exactly.
There's two shifter in your automatic wagon. (I guess might be FJ62)
One for transmission, the other for transfercase.
2wd <-> 4wd shifting is controled by transfercase and drive/reverse/neutral is controled by transmission.
Do you have trouble both or only one ?

snx | Are you 100% sure that your Transfer Case isn't in neutral?

| for all i know the truck could be in neutral however the transfer stick is in 4H as i write this... i appreciate everyones help, just so ya know... i have had the truck 5 years this has never happened... the truck never showed any tranny wear and tear by means of noises or shifting problems... i'm no mechanic, but i am not some noob who doesnt know how to go from 2H to 4L... i'm just curious if anyone has had or heard of an experience where the transfer case got stuck in neutral and the shifter wasnt doing anything... the other question i guess have is, has anyone replaced or rebuilt their transmission for fj62?
take care,

| I did it when I was test driving considering to buy. Didn't know what I was doing and ended up in a parking lot seemingly in neutral with no way out. What I had actually done was put the transfer case in neutral. Can you move the TC shift at all?
Solution? Shift TC into gear. Seriously, check and make sure this isn't your issue.

snx | Yes, I have had a rebuild done on my transmission. It is not pretty. There aren't very many shops that have experience with the A440F, and those that do really don't look forward to working on them again. I spent a little over $3 grand to have my Tranny and TC rebuilt and I am not happy with the results. If I had it to do all over again (which I may HAVE to do it all over again), I will either order a tranny from Rodney in Austrailia or ship it out to a cruiser shop to have an H55 put in it.
You can find a lot more info on the A440F by joining the 3FE group @ yahoo.... a lot of guys that are very knowledgable about our tranny's are in that group including Rodney, who is one of the world's foremost experts on the A440F. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/3FE/

| good luck with it. post your question on the 3FE board and somebody will more than likely be able to guide you in the right direction.
