| Steering Box Source?
So my recent, unintended, off-road excursion ended with a bent driveshaft, dented rear quarter, & a twisted sector shaft in my year-old rebuilt steering box. Called The Steering Store where I got it & worked out a deal to send it back for them to do a selective rebuild as it doesn't qualify as a good core but probably doesn't need much more than the shaft.
Anyone have other ideas/sources for a rebuilt box? Don't want to just slap a used one in there as I'm going for reliability & the PS pump on the Vortec puts out more pressure than a stock Toy one.

If a Scout 2 box fits, where do you find info on it? I researched all this a year ago when I was looking at getting a rebuilt stock box, but the closest I got to something that would fit was from an Astro.
Legend has it that there's a Saginaw box that bolts right up, but I've never been able to find out which one. | |

Searched HardCore, saw plenty of your writeups (mainly on ram assist) but all I saw about Scout boxes were on 40s - which you obviously know have trailing Pittman arms.
So you know exactly what I'm looking for, I need to order the box tomorrow,12/12/05. Can't afford another project, money- or time-wise (snow on ground now, more coming, plow in driveway). | |

Both woody and I have scout 2 boxes on our 40's. The pittman faces forwards.
as will the scout 2 box on my 60.
Look up woody's scout 2 conversion in the Tech links..
BTW, reliability on a sag box is impressive. I have had nothing but used sag boxes on my junk, and they have held up a lot better than the AGR "high performance" boxes that friends have purchased.

Spoke with Tregg(?) at Durex this afternoon who said the Scout II boxes are getting pretty scarce. He recommended against changing to one due to the unavailability of parts. That said, he has one on the shelf rebuilt stock for $698.
They can rebuild boxes to operate opposite to their original configuration, so forward/backward Pittman arm is not an issue. If it's a rock crawler they recommend a slow ratio, & they don't recommend variable ratio for the street. | |

| Most rebuild shops should have sector shafts. I would send your old one to be rebuilt then if need be the shop can up-charge you for a new shaft. I get my stuff rebuilt for about $85 here in Ft Worth.

There is NOTHING special about them.
I might be concerned about the guys recomendation...
Although, I do like the slow ratio and non variable ratio...

PM or post the phone #/URL of your rebuilder. TheSteeringStore normally charges $385 plus minimal shipping, with a 1-yr guarantee (but not against twisting the shaft). Scott there (sold me my rebuilt last year) says changing the sector shaft will be cheaper, but without knowing what else is wrong doesn't know how much.

Only dealt with TheSteeringStore once & still am satisfied. The advice about the ratios & variable assist came from Tregg at Durex, who was very helpful. I like live info from a real human who is knowledgable & humble, & make price a secondary consideration.
I have enough projects with custom crap to cause me to actively avoid it. You'd probably have to modify/fab a Pittman arm and/or drag link to make the Scout II work, besides welding a mounting plate on the frame & matching up a rag or U-joint, minimum, no? Add this to a possible parts shortage & you've got a career, not a project. | |

| If you want easy and stock then do your stock box.
Look up redneckram.com and talk to him about rebuilding.
he can probably do a good job on your box. I REALLY respect Matt..
