I had to dig into the transfer case this weekend and in prep purchased the needed seals and gaskets, one of which was the input seal. T-case to transmission fluid movement seems to be not uncommon with 60s but not common with 62s. So I ordered an input seal for an '85 FJ60 and an input seal for a FJ62. The t-case I had apart was from an '85 FJ60 but I used the FJ62 seal because I think it will prevent oil gear movement.

FJ60 oil seal part # 90311-48012
outer diameter - 72.3 mm; inner diameter - 46.8 mm; depth - 9.1 mm

FJ62 seal part # 90316-48003
outer diameter - 72.2 mm; inner diameter - 46.8 mm; depth - 10.8 mm

The major difference between the seals is that the FJ62 seal has dual spring-compressed lips, i.e. one on each side unlike the FJ60 seal which only has one spring-compressed lip.

The tcase rebuild kits come with the dual-spring seal. It's what I always use.

There's a thread on this somewhere, with lots of pix and comparisons - As Georg said, all the good rebuild kits for 60 t'cases come with the double-seal version. Use it, it's better, although either will work fine if you only had the single-seal handy.

Found it:

(NOK is the OEM)

So this newer seal will fit any split case? Why the heck do they have so many?

Ok, so I am about to replace the input shaft seal on my FJ60 transfer case. I have read some conflicting information on which way the seal goes on the shaft. I plan on using the later FJ62 seal. Can someone tell me the proper orientation of the seal on the shaft?

Spring side goes inboard, towards t-case.

The FJ62 seal has a lip seal and spring on each side. The FSM doesn't specify so I suppose it doesn't matter which way the double seal goes in.

Reviving a dead thread. Rebuild kit that I got from Marlin Crawler included the 3383E, but the OD is way too small for an 83 T case. OD needs to Needs to be about 74.2 mm diameter to fit. Anyone know the actual double lip seal number that fits the FJ60 split case?

The number on the original seal won’t match Toyota’s part numbers. That’s the manufacturer’s part number that’s on the seal. They probably make it specifically for Toyota.

The one that came out of my transfer case is an NOK BE1192E

That NOK # crosses to Toyota 90311-48002 or -48009 which is the seal for before or after your production date.

The Seal in the parts catalog is 90311-48007 for 10/82-11/84

This is where pictures would help.

Is this a USA spec truck?

Got a photo of orientation? I would think that installation from the front side would be better as there is a nice taper. Dual lip with the flat side facing the front so it can be tapped in from the front. That is how one was installed on a spare case I have.
