I did a search on this thread and didn't pull up anyone listed for Rhode Island. Anyone know of a good mechanic in RI, Southern Mass, or western Conn?
Thanks,
William

Another good one in the Portland, Oregon area-
Willamette Blvd. Service Center
6845 N. Willamette Blvd
Portland, Oregon 97203
Larry Harper
(503) 286-0907
The owner has been into Cruisers since the early 70s. He even has a 55 he bought new and installed one of the early 3Fs (carbed) off the line into the piggy. His son is eventually going to take over the business and there's nothing he'd rather do than work on cruisers. Excellent people and his son is online-aware.

Great NJ / NY Mechanic & Body Restoration Person for LC
José Riveria is great!
he does: Superb body work! All other mechanical work! Amazing restorations! He's only about 20 minutes from NYC (and near the bus stop).

Los Angeles; East Los Angeles (seriously inexpensive)
1. Jose's Auto Repair, Gage Ave @ Eastern Ave (southeast corner), Bell Gardens, Ca, 90201
> No phone # (that I can find right now)
> Replaced my (rotted) fuel tank & sending unit (I provided) for under $100.
> Honest (if he can't do it, he will tell you)
> Great source for references (he provided two more names on this list)
2. California Carburetor Co, 6461 Florence Ave, Bell Gardens, CA, 90201
> (562) 927-5589
> Completely rebuilt on-site, for less than $200
> Included removal and re-install
> Within 48 hours
> Ask for Tony
* They do a lot of mail-order business, as well
3. Lencho's Auto Electric, 6138 Atlantic Ave, Maywood, Ca, 90270
> This guy discovered the short in my ignition, repaired it, and called me back within 3 hours!
> Shop is at rear of this address (no signage) - Behind Four Star Auto Parts
> Does a lot of complete rewires for restored cars and trucks;
* on one day he had a '67 Mustang
* on another day, he had a '56 (?) Chevy Cameo PU, w/ a Napco 4x4 (sweet!)
* An "old-timer" who knows his trade...
4) HP Auto Imports, 2529 E. Slauson Ave., Huntington Park, CA, 90255
323-585-2101 or 323-697-5982
* Located on the North-side of the street, just a couple doors away from a Taco Bell - a good place to park your rig, if you go and visit him (on the corner at the light).
* Nearest cross-street is S. Central Ave., which is just East of their location.
The main contact is Oscar. He moved from his former location to the current location, which is owned by his nephew. Oscar is an older guy, very quiet, very thorough, and conscientious.
He will do all the work In-House, except for shaving the head. He's straight-up about whether you will need new parts, or can reuse the original parts. If an issue comes up (more $$$), he will call you before he goes any further.
Since the facility is small, you may have to wait a few days until he can (physically) fit your truck in (he said I could expect a week, or more, to do the job but had it done in just a few days).
His nephew is Napo (short for Napolean - seriously). He would be the second contact, as well as the owner. I didn't really deal with him much, but he was nice enough. Their business card devotes one side to advertising them as Landcruiser Specialists.
They also handle the three main Japanese import brands and their spin-offs. Also states that he is a Factory-trained Mechanic. Don't really know, but his shop is always full whenever I stop by.
Tell Oscar that William sent you, the guy who is moving to CR with his girl.
Note; Also included in this Head Job is a return visit (after 500 to 700 miles), to re-adjust the valves. This is SOP. No extra charges involved.
One more thing; I told him I need to do the Power Steering Pump. He says he can do it for $225 (I'm pretty sure that was the amount). He will rebuild it, if possible, at this price. Includes all labor - removing and re-installing. Otherwise, he will get a rebuilt unit, and it may cost a bit more.
He prefers to use all original parts on Landcruisers. Didn't care for the GM/ Saginaw PS conversion. It's up for debate, but I have no qualms about heeding any of his opinions.
Good luck...
I'm finding a lot of these guys in this part of town are VERY REASONABLE with their pricing and very competent in their abilities. I moved from Redondo Beach to Bell Gardens (saving cash to move to Central America), and cannot believe huge difference in quotes.
None of these guys are "illegals" or back-alley shops. Well-established and knowledgeable. Plenty of people warned me about moving/living here, but I have had no problems (and I am white as they come). No animosity. No jacking up the rates for the "gringo". Just hard-working people who know their stuff.

i've used Mr. Nguyen in Garland, TX a few times. really knows his way around the cruisers and seems to be honest and fairly priced. i was convinced i needed a carb rebuild and he talked me out of it. he could have easily taken my $300 but told me my carb was fine. turns out is was a wiring issue that he fixed for no charge.

San Diego
Anyone ever used Hard Rock 4X4 in San Diego? They look like a combo salvage yard and offroad mechanic shop. They have a bunch of Jeeps and also a few 40's for sale. Anyone used them? What about good salvage yards in San Diego for Land Cruisers'?

Cool let me know how it goes. For SD everyone keeps talking about Protrux in San Marcos. I need to get a few things looked at so I'll let you know about my experience with them. Trying to save up for the power steering conversion.

I used them for my Tacoma when I was in SD, They are good and don't sell services that aren't needed based on what you want from your rig.
John is here on Mud, check the 80's thread where Boston Mangler was running an 80 in the Baja 1000, TRUX was a sponsor.

This shop is also in Miramar:
http://www.sdtruckshop.com/
I have used both of those shops. The owner of San Diego Truck Shop is the son of the owner of Protrux in San Marcos.
For a newer model vehicle I'd go to San Diego Truck Shop. For older Cruisers I'd go to SDTRUX. My opinion.
I found San Diego Truck Shop to be less expensive though.

Seattle Area Auto Repair
Seattle, WA

I was turned away by a few shops in my neighbourhood before finding Alki Auto Repair. They've been great helping me with some projects that were too involved for my limited mechanical abilities. Good work, competitive prices.

Finding A Needle In A Haystack; Like This Forum?
Excuse me if this topic has been addressed. Forgive me if I am asking the impossible. But I wonder if this Mechanic Recommendation Section couldn't be organized - at least - by States?
Why not create a Spreadsheet-style document? Start with a State file, then list each mechanic or shop by Zip Code - and, finally, alphabetically. Have a place to note who referred. Maybe a rating system?
I would suspect that it would take some time. And, it's possible, that there isn't enough help to sort this one out.
Or, maybe, it's just me. Believe me, I have spent quite a bit of time reading these posts. But it would be nice to see just a listing for my area. Or, a listing for somewhere I may be headed.
But it does test my patience when I have search the whole list, for that needle to appear...

I can recommend this shop wholeheartedly:
Tri-Auto
5203 G Street
Chino, CA 91710
(909) 465-6422
Ask for the owner, Danny Arteaga, who was a Toyota certified master mechanic for 20 years before opening up his own shop. He owns an 87’ FJ60 himself and knows the FJ60 backwards and forwards. He’s worked on my 60 extensively and his prices are reasonable.
Now, does anyone know a mechanic in the Los Angeles county area that can do a heavy duty rebuild and balancing of my 2F?

Anyone got a good wrench in Austin? I'm continuing my search for a 60, but I wanted to make sure I had a shop in place in case anything came up that I couldn't handle or get help with from one of you. I talked with a shop in South Austin and they didn't seem to thrilled with the idea of possibly having to work on another 60. He told me that they were nothing but a headache and a pita to work on and they didn't like dealing with them. Not a good start to my search.
