overheating???????

Just picked up my new 1983 FJ60. It seems to be running a little hot thow. I live in Mt. and this morning I ran down to town to get somthing to drink and when I got back and turned off the engine, the fan continued to run. Is that normal? The temp outside is about 38 or so.

yes, the fan is an engine cooling fan, it turns on if the engine's too hot (only while it's off) Just look at the guage- you usually don't want it to go much past 2/3. (mine runs at 1/3) If it is gettin up there, first try servicing the cooling system...I just did this and it helped ME a good bit. while you're in there, you should probably go ahead and replace the thermostat as well

Mike

btw, good looking cruiser! i like the color

My 60 is that color too. In fact it looks just like that, I better go check the driveway...

Actually, what is the evidence that it's overheating? If it runs hot on the guage, replace the cheap stuff first-like thermostat, hoses etc. When that does not solve the problem, you need to consider the radiator and the fan clucth, and likely both. Do not let your 60 overheat as the heads tend to crack at the freeze plugs on top of the head.

The fan you hear running is normal-it cools the carb after you stop to prevent vapor lock when you go to restart. The vent you see on the driver side front quarter is a real vent-that's where the air comes from to feed the fan. If you put your hand there you'll feel it.
