snow chains on 33'' MT tires

Hi everybody !

Does anybody used snow chains (like Diamond type - left picture) with 33'' or similar size Mud-Terrain type tires (like Firestone Destination MT or BFG MT)?
There is a warning next to that type of chains that "will not fit aggressive tread or square shoulder tread".

http://www.tirechain.com/285-75R-16LT.htm

I have read many snow chain posts, and I know it is reccomended to use V-Bar chains, but I would like to have chains, I can put on without moving the car. I'll use them only in emergency on ice - no havy winter off-road plans.

And second question: If I put 285/75r16 (equals approx 33.1x11.3'') to my HJ60 with OME Dakar lift, and put snow chains, does the risk of rubbing will increase a lot ?

I am about to decide the type and size of my new tires, and want to consider some possible threats. For now I am opting for Firestone Destination MT 285/75r16 on 7'' rims.

There shouldn't be an issue with chains on 33's with a Dakkar lift. Go out and flex your suspension and make sure you have good clearance in the front fenders by the mudflaps, I think that would be the only likely place you would get the chains to rub. I would also follow the instructions of not putting the diamond type chains on an aggressive or square edged tire, they must have a reason for making that point. Get a set of V-bar or ice gripper chains and you should be happy. They are not that hard to put on if you place them correctly and then roll forward on them. Make sure they fit by putting them on in the garage with a jack and realize that you won't be able to get them that tight out in the real world. Make sure you have an extra link or two all the way around so you can actually get them on when out in winter conditions.

I've a set for my 33x9.5 MTs that I used a winter or two. Problem was more that they helped dig into the snow rather than get through, so as soon as I got onto the axles, end of the road. Was more a function of the tread type and skinny tire than the chains, not a good combo in deeper snow.

Still need to get a set for the 33x10.5 ATs, but they've worked so well in places I shouldn't have a right to be driving through, I've been putting it off.

Damn, those are a helluva lot cheaper than some Kaymar ones I was looking at.

good info - it confirms 9.5 are too skiny. So my choise of 10.5 ~ 11.5 should be ok. Especially when chains should be used more on ice than in deep snow.

I can understand You - choise between AT and MT is sometimes tough. But as one man said:
...if You plan to drive off-road, no matter if once a week or once a year, and You've got a BIG car, AT tire is a waste o money...

And I am tempted to agree with him. Especially than modern MT tires are allowing You to drive on highway quite comortably. And maybe 2nd set o tires then should be more 'winter' oriented - or just snip the MT.

Hey Aklosak I use 285 75 16 tires WLid Country TXR on black wheels the chains I cut doen from Tractor trailer chains my buddy got for me. They are cam lock models with very heavy pieces. I just put the truck up on jack stands test fit and cut until everything spun with out interference. The hardest part was relocating one cross chain on each set so there was even spacing between cross chains, gotta have that smooth ride with chains, or I'm just picky about some stuff. Hope this helps you.

I've got some Les Schwab chains for a 33x12.5 or 14.5 tire that I need to get rid of. Never been used!

Make an offer.

Would those fit a 305/70R16?
