So, today was a great trail ride. Didn't lose any paint, climbed some major vertical feet, and shot lotsa guns.

Problem:

On the way out of the woods i developed an idle problem. It happened while going back up about a 3 mile long, 30 degree, boulder laden trail. I was creeping along in first just givin'er hell and then she just died. fired back up no problem, but wouldn't idle to save her life all the way off the mountain and back home. I stopped in at the car wash to clean the mud off and still an idle problem!

Symptoms:

Starts and drives fine, but when stopped she just sputters at around ~500 rpm. Usually she runs ~750 rpm.

Machine:

2F, Desmogged completely

ALSO- i found a loose hose coming from the rear of the passenger side crank case. I have searched high and low in all of the toyota manuals i own and nothing!

here is a little porn from today.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. The PCV is in that location you mentioned above. Check to make sure that its still there and connected.

I've had crap in the carb causing bad idle. Twice after wheeling.
Not sure how it's getting there past the filter.

Anyway, pulling the carb, removing the air horn, and cleaning the jets has got me going twice now.

Good luck,

Dave

BTW Nice looking 60, looks familiar.

Alright, replaced the filter, checked the sight glass. I'm getting good clean fuel, but she just wont idle. I can get it to run just like normal using the choke, starts on the first turn every time. As soon as i push the choke in, just a sputtering die!

I looked at the carb, looks solid, no obvious signs of any screws backing out, all vacuum caps are installed. I still cant figure out what that hose coming out of the crank case is for. Any input on that one? it's on the passenger side rear block about 3 inches above the oil pan and a 1/2" line.

What gives? the throttle linkage does look like there is excessive play when the choke is disabled, would this actually let the engine die though?

need input guys, I am CLUELESS.

the suggestion that gets the problem solved will get a real 20 dollar paypal!

lol,

Glocks, old 1911's, 12 gauge. wife, sister and the dude is the father in law.

now onto the problem, checked and rechecked all vacuum lines. you guys think i sent some major mumbo jumbo into my carb and now she just wont idle? i find it odd that with the choke it will idle just fine. you would figure opposite. More flow = more DP.

my only other option is to pull it and clean it. would you fully dismantle or just clean as an entire unit?

From what you describe it sounds like your pcv valve hose has come off which will cause exactly what you described.

Chitown already mentioned the PCV. I agree. Even if not PCV, definitely sounds like a vacuum leak of somekind. If it idles with the choke closed, that tells me it is running too lean. Closing the choke compensates for this, allowing it to idle better. A lean condition would be caused by a vacuum leak, as the engine is pulling "extra" air from a location it shouldn't be.

.

update:

I inspected the carb and all fasteners, vacuum lines, and caps. The desmog removed the majority of the connections mated on the carb itself and all the caps are installed. I drove around looking for a gasket before i pulled the carb and i couldnt find one! i inspected the carb couldnt really get an idea of cleanliness.
The line on the rear of the valve cover to the air filter holder was disconnected. Possible source?

Captain: i just put a new exhaust on it. Magnaflow to be exact

stumped,

JB

After weeks of nightshift and getting to work on The cruiser one day a week:flipoff2: ... I rebuilt the car and swapped tanks. I primed it and fired it up at about 4 am this morning. She runs amazing with one small problem: no fuel delivery! I figured after filling the bowl a few times and running the engine the lines would be full. I added more gas for any npsh concerns and still nothing. I also vented at the carb. Stumped.. Pump is new. All lines are connected. Anyone??

Turns out it was the float that was not properly adjusted. I must have first calibrated it with the gasket on. 1 mm and she works! Thanks to all who had input. If anyone wants pics of this complete fuel delivery system, just ask.

So while building a new rear bumper and dreaming of new reservoir shocks.... i noticed i have almost "flat" leafs in the rear. My SOA is probably 8 years old and its time for a new set. Im not exactly which way to go here. any input?

also, i have read alot about reservoir shocks lately and i see the nice price in the billsteins.. are they up to it? I really need to get some pics uploaded so you guys can see what i am working with.
