"Search" results for horn-fix...Landpimp???
yo, Landpimp, or anyone else who went thru this,
heres a quote from the thread,
"Pop the "Land Cruiser" emblem from the steering wheel face, loosen the nut (7mm socket, IIRC) so that you don't pop yourself in the nose with the wheel, pull like hell to loosen the wheel, remove the nut completely, pull the wheel off, shim the brass horn ring using small washers (mine used two stacked on top of one another under each of the horn ring screw holes), re-attach the ring, re-attach the wheel, check for horn, re-attach emblem."
my question is, what/where/how, does "shim the brass horn ring using small washers (mine used two stacked on top of one another under each of the horn ring screw holes), mean????? any pics to help figure this out? i pulled the wheel off, but cant figure out where the "brass horn ring" is located. is it on the wheel itself? do you have to pull the 3 screws off back of wheel? please help.... i will attach some pics of what im talkin about tomorrow. thks, sean

I stripped one of my screws holding the front cover so I have to fix that prob first and then get to my malfuntioning horn. I'm sure posted responses to your question will help me too. Post pics for sure please.

Working from memory.... The brass ring is mounted on the steering column. With the steering wheel removed, you should see the ring around the splined shaft than the wheel mounts on. The wheel has a little spring loaded plunger that is supposed to contact the ring. I guess the plunger wears down and shimming the ring up helps make contact. Once you've found the ring, try shorting the ring to the steering shaft. If the horn still doesn't work, you problem lies elswhere.

I don't know about the 60s but on 62s the plunger thingy is on te column and the brass ring is on the wheel.
If you clean the ring, don't forget to grease it with dielcetric grease or it'll make a scraping noise when you steer.

I fixed just this very problem on my 62 this weekend. I just soldered a little blob-o-solder onto the end of the plunger. Worked like a charm.

the washers go on the column, not the wheel, under the ring.

you know....im not sure if 60's and 62's are the same. i see the posts stating, "the brass ring is on the column, where the stearing wheel mounts to the shaft." well, MY brass ring is held on to the "wheel", by (3) little screws, like example above. the "plunger", is mounted next to a brown plastic piece, ON THE SHAFT. so, im guessin, by reading the posts above, and comparing what i have, 60's and 62's must have different setups, or, maybe year differences have some effect...?

I am pretty sure the quote from the first post is mine. As far as I know, the above is correct. I fixed my horn with the washers based on info and help from cahilc on the board. I just used small washers from a set of washers I purchased at Sears.
It works, but it is best to fix your horn correctly (as in according to factory specs). The shimmed horn should just be a temporary fix, even though mine has been shimmed for about 6 months now.
After reading my own post... holy bad grammer and puctuation, Batman!

Brass ring is on the steering wheel and the plunger is on the steering column attached to the vehicle. Just be careful when you pull the steering wheel that your nose is out of the way.
The plunger rides on the brass ring for electrical contact for the horn to work. What happens is the plunger wears down and no longer fully contacts the brass ing. By shimming the brass ring with washers you may close the gap to the plunger for a while before another plunger/ring is probably needed.

Seriously, a little dab of solder on the end of the plunger. It took 5 minutes including diassembly, heating time, and reassembly. The solder is a little softer than the copper contacts so it may wear out sooner than the 230k that the original lasted, but I bet they will still make solder when that happens.

I did this same fix and at first it was confusing but finally reading carefully and looking at the way it works it wasn't hard to figure out. Those threads really helped me. Thanks
