2F Almost shutting off going down hill, backwards

So I went on a run with our local TLCA club last Sunday.

I was all excited to finally get this 60 a little dirty. When my turn came around, I proceeded to go uphill only to find out the front wheels weren't in 4LO. This is a whole other problem that we think we figured out and is a relatively easy fix.

As I tried going up a couple of times and failed, I had to go back down in reverse.

This is where the weird stuff happened:

My 60 suddenly started dying and barely stayed on. All the warning lights came on like when it's first being started or it's losing all power.

The brake pedal did go down pretty low. I eventually got down the hill, but I didn't like the fact that I lost brake boost and it was about to shut down.

So I'm guessing(with the help of Mark A.) that this could be the Brake booster giving out?

The carb is running great and I don't think it's the problem.

Fuel delivery problem?

Shrug

Any ideas?

Where is your float level set? The middle of the site glass?

So, how did the brakes work and the engine run on the drive home? If they worked OK, then it was the lack of vacuum from the motor that caused the brakes to not work, not the other way around.

Also, on a 60, how is it that you didn't have 4lo? With the mechanical shifter / linkage and the shift gate, it's pretty hard to put it in 4lo and not be in 4lo.

If you didn't have it in low, but tried to go downhill in reverse, in HI, with the brake on, could you have been going too slow and lugging the engine?

However, you should do a search for the tests for the brakes, because if you lost vacuum to the booster because the engine was lugging, I would expect the pedal to get hard, not to go to the floor.

The brakes were fine after this happened and we verified it wasn't in 4LO when it said it wasn't. Going to check out the linkage tomorrow.

I think it was lugging the engine...it sure sounded like it was dying...I mean the brake light came on too like when you first start it.

Not sure, but I had it rebuilt about 1.5 years ago and it runs great, but I'll check tomorrow.
