Easy way to make your stock wheels look new again!

Just thought I would share. I decided to clean up my slightly rusty and dull wheels and they came out really good. Product I used was called Bar Keepers Friend with a wet rag. I have used this stuff to clean boats, metal, and the bathroom! It is great stuff and will disappear that little bit of surface rust. Super easy, fast and cheap! Now I need to paint the whole rig.

Nice! Where did you pick up the Bar Keepers Friend?

Sounds funny, but I'm serious.

My wife gets it at the Grocery store, should be able to pick up pretty much anywhere. She gets really mad when it ends up in the Garage!

After cleaning mine, I painted them with POR-15 clear coat product. They're easier to keep looking good now and are protected from rusting.

thats a great idea.. did you surface prep them at all or just clean em and spray em?

how is the clear coat holding up? my gut feeling on this is that it would start to chip off.. the chrome is not a very pourous surface.. i cant imagine it holding a clear coat that long..

Which one are you using? I see seven different options. I'm guessing the Lime & Rust remover?

Just the regular product does a wonderful job on kitchen stuff. I'd try that first. Can always use it in the kitchen later. My GF swears by it.

another really easy way to do this that involved little to no money was using WD-40, steel wool, and some elbow grease. MNy wheels went from a light rust color all the way around to veryu shiney chrome

Yeah, I used steel wool too. A product called Brasso really cleans them well.

I'd think steel wool would scratch up a metal surface rather than shine it. Chrome must be particularly hard or something.

Steel wool with wax works well too. They won't scratch as long as you don't use too much pressure.

Try Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner. It's not an abrasive like BKF and is amazing. Spray it on, wipe it down, hose it off and you'll be amazed at the results.

I did that and you're right, they look like new when scrubbed too but basically I'm lazy and even w/o scrubbing they look great.

I felt the same until I used that eagle 1 stuff that you have to sit and polish by hand for almost and hour on each wheel and dosent look a quarter as good as the hot rims

Did not surface prep them. Did it this past spring, so too early to tell. The local paint store carrying the product thought it would hold up very well. We'll see.

NAPA Self-etching primer and gloss back. Held up very well but pulled them when I went to 35's.

I can't say anything other than black looks good on red cruisers. I think there are plenty of pics of blue ones with black wheels.
