washer between fan and fluid coupling

I'm in the process of swapping out a new fluid coupling on my '85's 2F and I noticed that when I took the fan off of the fluid coupling that is a washer at each of the four bolt locations. The washers were brittle and are blue in color. Seems like a plastic type of material. They look deformed a bit, as if they were elongated somehow, and they crumbled when I tried to peel them off of the old fluid coupling. I didn't notice this component on the 2F's FSM. Does anyone know of the purpose for this washer? How critical is it to track it down and install it?

Thanks in advance for any hints!
