Help from the Aussies out there... Fender Flare Question
Looking for some insight from any of the folks from the Southern Hemisphere on this one. I've got a set of fender flares for my wagon that are made for the 60 series (they're marked HJ60 on the inside).
Since they aren't common here in the States I'm looking to see if anyone can give me some info on how they are installed on your rigs. The more detail the better in terms of attachment types (rivets, screws, bolts, etc), and pictures would also be appreciated of how they mount up and look when finished from the inside of the wheelwells, rear doors, etc.
Pics of mine are attached as a reference.
Thanks in advance
Koby

If they are toyota fender flares, then it looks like they are installed using several "L" brackets. You can get s sense from the toyodiy website:
ToyoDIY.com
do you have the extra wide mud flaps, too?

That'd be stellar - thanks. While you're there - could you check on one more thing for me - in the Aussie 60's do any of them have a grab handle for the back seat mounted diagonally across the door opening from the B pillar to the ceiling? It's hard to describe, most new toyota SUV's have them. My rig has bolt holes for them (I can feel them under the headliner) but have not seen a US 60/62 with grab handles there. The best way to imagine it is if you were sitting in the back seat you could reach forward with you arm towards the pillar next to the front seat and there'd be a grab handle mounted near the upper seat belt mount.
Thanks again
Koby

Hi Alpine, Those flares you have are not factory flares, they are an aftermarket copy. To attach these go find some big aircraft rivets to mount them with. I usually superglue a rubber strip on the top lip that goes against the body work, then push the flare up tight against the fender lip and drill and rivet. No more then an hour to mount all of them.
If these were genuine flares, there would be moulded mounting bosses in the flare that carry a 10mm stud that mounts to the body.
Hope this helps.

The truck is a hj61 with factory flares, ive pulled them off as tomorrow its off to the panel beaters to have the sunroof welded in,i have couple to repair so i thought i could repair them while i wait for the truck.

So mine are factory,i think yours are made by a mob in QLD,i forget there name, the brackets you may be able to do something similar with, each end of the flares exept the short rear one has a self tapper into a plastic grommet/nut.
Mutely was on the money exept for the brackets but i don't know how your gonna get a couple of fixed points through the body panel without any bosses as the factory ones have.

Mutley and Goldchaser - that is perfect - thank you.
Rivets, superglue, rubber and a few cross words sound like they'll make this job possible. I'm extremely experiences in the use of the latter three and look forward to adding riveting to my skills.
Thanks for taking those pictures Goldchaser - I'd love to see pics of the sunroof you are putting in after it is all said and done - I've thought about sunroofs myself but have always been warned off by folks saying that leakage can be a problem in the rain. My gut has always been that if they're well done it shouldn't be an issue but I've never seen a completed job done aftermarket.
Mutley - what type of rubber do you usually use between the fender and the flare? does it have a shape to it or a lip of some sort? Where do you source it?
Thanks again
Koby

Goldchaser - one last question - on your factory set, is it three pieces in the rear on each side and one piece for the front?

Yeah, it goes on the inside to close the gap between the inner door and the back edge of the flare mounted to the outside of the door.... I just can't figure out a clean way to mount it so that it looks nice. I'm having the whole rig repainted after the new year so I may leave that little piece to the guys at the body shop to mount and sort out. I'm sure they could make it look nice with a little body filler and paint once they have it in place.

Mine are mounted with rivets. The rivets and flexible finish moulding came with the flares. They are Australian TJM flares. I think this firm has closed shop here in the States.

Koby: you can get the B-pillar grab assist handle from your toyota dealer. At least I got mine from CruiserDan. Here's my thread:

Alpine,
I'm not computer savvy enough to post up a picture, I embarrassed to say. However, I did buy them here in the States. I got them on a closeout when TJM was closing up U.S. distribution. The only firm that still offers 60/62 flares is J.T. Outfitters, or at least they are still on their web site at 500. I actually bought a second set at the time, which I ultimately used as a down payment on some rear armor. If I can help further using words exclusively, please don't hesitate to ask.

Koby-
Glad to see that you're tackling this. If you go with rivets in the holes that are already in the rear flares, be sure that you use ones that are long enough. The guy who mounted this set when it was on my rig didn't use long enough ones, and only about half of them actually went all the way into the sheet metal. Measure them to be sure, but if you can't find rivets that'll do the job, you might be better off with stove bolts.
Can't wait to see pics of the finished job.

Thanks man - they are cool flares to be sure... I think I'll get it sorted out without too much trouble, especially with the help I've already gotten from the crew here. I'll definitely post pics and keep you posted on it. Thanks again for the hookup on them.

Hey Goldchaser, how much do you like your FC 2's? I've got nearly 60,000 klms on mine and not even half worn, I beat on them every chance I get. Hijack over.

Oh great tyres,im not a big wheeler as i use my truck for hittin the outback etc prospecting or fishing trips in the mountains but when you are on gravel roads they are awsome, grip everywhere.
The only drawback is on the tar, they are noisy.
Otherwise great tyres.

Thanks Clint - absolutely on the pics... You're right on the flares, it is a great look, and I'm also tired of my 12.50's spraying mud up the side of my rig every time I drive down my back alley. It was cool the first few dozen times but now it just gets old not being able to see out my side windows after a little rain. The flares will keep all that mud where it belongs.
