manual tranny options for a fj62

As I have posted earlier, my auto transmission has a limited amount of life left in it. I really want to do a manual swap, but I can't begin to afford the $3K-$4k I was told it would cost to get an H55F. Is there a cheaper alternative? My rig is not lifted, but I would like to run a larger tire, maybe a 31x10.50 or a 32x11.50 (will this size work on a stock fj62?). My rig is not a daily driver. It mostly cruises backroads at speeds below 60mph. It does see significant offroad abuse, so the tranny needs to be strong.

I was wondering about the H42. I am fine with only having 4 speeds, as long as it is a good reliable tranny. Will it bolt up to my 3FE? It looks like it should be an easy swap, or does this transmission not bolt up to my transfer case? Will the FJ60 clutch pedal and linkage all bolt into my FJ62?

What about other transmissions, like an NV4500 or some other domestic models? Surely someone out there has discovered something that will fit with minimal cost and modifications. This engine is so similar to an old Chevy straight 6, I cant believe there is not a transmission that will adapt easily.

The cheapest and easiest swap is the H42. These can be very cheap and you can use your existing t-case. You need bellhousing and clutch components but all of that is easy to source.

The best swap is an H55f. Maybe not in the budget but still the best swap.

SM420/465 possible and inexpensive, but the adapters are $$.

NV4500 would be a nice swap but expensive especially when you add in adapters.

Since the work is the same and the drive shaft mods will be needed anyway, the H55f swap is by far your best bet. H42 is understandable and cheap, but you'll want an overdrive gear in the end.

I am currently in the middle of converting my 62 to a manual. I am using the parts of a complete 60, including the H42 and the 60 split case. I want to get rid of the vacuum 4 wheel drive, thats why I am not using the 62 case. So far has been straight forward. Someday I will have an H55 or H41, but for now this will do fine.

I've seen several H55F's for the 2K range, just in the past month. After you've driven both, there's no comparison to the 4speed, but there are lots of 4speeds out there for $500 or so.

Sell your truck as is and buy a 60, maybe? Sounds like you don't have a lot of mods invested in your truck, so you wouldn't be losing much ground there.

You can probably get a h55f for about $1800 new. I paid $1786 the last time I bought one. That is the only way to go for a h55f as there are too many varying degrees of rebuilt. You should be able to use FJ60 drivelines which can be found fairly cheap rather than retubing yours. You'll want late model ones (after mid 85 4/85). You can use a h42 shifter. If you go this route I have one I'd send you for the cost of shipping. The 62 transfer case has lower gears than the 60 case in the low range so I'd try to keep the 62 case. You can also use the H42 late model bellhousings (they are actually stamped 3FE).

31s shouldn't be a problem on a stock 62. You could even go 33s if you went with a narrow one 10.5 or 9.5 width.

No it doesen't. Low range in the FJ60s is 2.3 roughly. FJ62 the low range is probably the same, or may be 1.99. We need one apart to count gears. There was a big thread on this awhile back, and see Cruiseroutfitters webpage.

The 62 case however is desirable due to the 38mm idler and actual bearings (not bushings) supporting the gears on the output shaft.

From what I understand early 60 t-cases are 1.99, later modles (85-87) have 2.2 t-cases.

But this is not correct. Please see the past threads with gear counts and pictures.

Check this link:
Cruiser Outfitters

The H42s got the 2.3 cases and the H55s got the 1.99 cases.

There has been speculation but no gear counts with the A440 cases.
