Still Will Not Idle

WTF - almost about ready to break down and bring her to the shop.

Alright - here's what happend. She's been running fine. Steady Vac. (20+ in Hg.) at idle (700RPM). Was running fine about a month ago. Went to start her the next morning - would not hold an idle at all.

She'll run fine above 1000RPM, with choke closed (with steady Vac). As soon as RPMs drop - idle becomes erractic - Vac. readings are horrible.

So far I've....

Drained/Re filled Tank
Replaced Fuel Filters
Regasketed Carb/Adapter/Intake
Checked Dizzy
Checked Ign.
Checked for intake gasket leak (none)

Running a Weber 38. I've already blown the carb out/cleaned jets several times. WTF! Almost at my breaking point.

Any help is appreciated.

Please.

Wow, look at all the expensive **** in your sig line. Perhaps you should make the damned thing run, reliably, before dragging it thru an offroad catalog with a magnet attached! After all the work it took to install all that, I'd thinhk a couple of water leaks should be minor! ~TEXX (IH8MUD member) 10/09

Sounds almost like a ballast resister problem.

Starts fine but will not run.

I would check the coil again, I think they have an internal resister.

...

I really don't think that it's a ballast problem - will check however.

Fuel pressure is good - 3/3.5 PSI per Weber specs.

Everything is pointing towards a vacuum leak - since choke is closed to compensate for bad idle mixture. I haven't found any leaks using the aerosol method. Checked all vac. caps as well - everything is ok.

WTF.

I'm not sure the 60's utilize 'ballast resister' any where in ign ckt.

How long have you had the 60 w/ weber? Other than truck, what changed since last week (e.g., weather turned cold . . .need more choke / richer mix ?)

Have you tried (might need a buddie to feather gas pedel) squirting carb cleaner...little spritz here & there...at various 'joints' in intake route (carb to mani, mani to head, etc) . . .small rev up is indicative of a vac leak.

Does intake mani have the crack that many 60's have ? If so, crack may have grown (step change) and too much leakeage....

I would think:
If it just dies: fuel problem
If it lopes, hunts, stutteres and stammers so to speak:vac leak.

I had an idle problem recently where it was idling real low around 500 RPM. It was driving me nuts as well. I pulled the number one spark plug, which happened to be a bosch platinum spark plug and it was as black as midnight with soot. I replaced all six with nice new champions, parts store did not have the NGKs in stock, and my idle problem went by by. I have to use the choke about one pull until it warms up but other than that dirty spark plugs was what was giving me problems.

Check the EGR valve. They can get stuck easy. Put a longer vac line on it, and apply some vac by mouth while tapping on the EGR below the vac hat. If you hear a chunk rattle down, you will know that's what it was.

No EGR sys. I'm thinking it could possibly be PCV valve. Not sure - will report tomorrow.
