Headers, desmog and a carb rebuild is all you need my friend.

Does it have to be headers, Or would just finish desmoging it and a Carb rebuild help in that department?

TLCAddict,
How are you getting 2200 RPMS at 65 mph with stock tires? I have to do about 55 mph to get down to 2200 RPMS and I have 31" tires and 4.11 gearing...

A desmog and carb rebuild will yield significant improvements in performance as well as fuel economy with or without headers. Headers, for me anyway, give me the sound I was looking for.

My 88 is completely stock, except for the OME and 32s. Just loves to run about 65 to 70. And gets 250 on a tank regardless of what you are doing. I guess about 11 mpg all around. Doesn't seem to change if you're towing a boat or loaded trailer. Always about the same. A great truck.

I had JEEPS before. Both the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. All of them had the straight six and seemed to get about 17-18 regardless. But I can tow more and carry more in the cruiser and its just a lot more fun to drive.

I just got 2 1/2" exhaust put on from the cats back, and the head was cleaned up without changing anything in it this last June. Last tank as 13.6 mpg in the city. Have yet to check highway with the new exhaust, but I was only getting 11 city before the exhaust - so I should see some gains over the road too. All stock rig, except for the 31.5" BFG A/Ts. I am having the head and manifold port/polished and a valve job done after the first of the year - should see some gains then too.

recently...

I recently put on a jim c. rebuilt carb - getting 15.6 MPGs driving about 70% highway/30% city. 4.11s, 33s, H55f, ARB, winch, rear bumper/spare.

My 89, stock except Man-a-fre header, 33's and 3" OME and an ARB front bumper, was getting 9.5 regardless of conditions

Been parked since July since it was my DD at 100-300 miles per day, just couldnt' afford to feed it. Bought an 08 Scion XD for work.

Put the cruiser up for sale but just a couple nibbles and no real bites.

It's ok, cause the other night, the wife says, "why don't you keep the landcruiser and fix it up? After all, it's paid for and not a DD anymore

Honey, have I told you lately how much I Love you??

Now...what to do 1st?????

14 -15mpg highway on my 85 stock (31" tires) (with many carb and exhaust leaks, am fixing),
30-35mpg on my 83 bj60 275r15 tires, can't wait to put larger legs on, 5spd with overdrive(the od in 5th brings the revs down from 2200 to 1600 at 75mph, the 3b loves sitting at 1600- 1700 (i'm not sure about the diff gearing) think I need to rebuild my od though, they don't last long without extra cooling as i found out.

I'm getting 110 miles to the tank... Help!!! Just bought the truck while working in Venezuela and I can't figure out the problem... If anyone knows of a diagnostic besides just a tune up (just did that, but here in Venezuela it's not the same thing as the U.S... the mechanic basically diddled with the timing and changed the plugs) I would be very thankful i.e. what specifically should I look for and have done to the truck... Thank you very much guys, I love this pig, but it burns too much gas...

I heard Venezuelan gas has a lot of sulfur, dirty/clogged injectors, fuel filter maybe???

I have a 84 FJ60 that has some carb issues and leaks some oil. Run 31 BFGs and have stock 3.7 diffs with 4 speed H42. I get about 13.5-14.5 MPG usually. Most of my driving is 16 miles to work. I have a couple hills and about 12 traffic lights to go through. Gets about the same on the highway since I have to run higher RPMs to stay at a safe speed. I actually even passed someone on the highway the other day. Doesn't happen very often though. Around town I usually shift gears at 3k. Stuff starts to sound like it's going to blow up after that.

Well maintained 88' FJ62 w/175k 35's with 5:29's ( slightly corrected for gears) best so far was 16MPG on the hiway. ( no heavy bumpers, unloaded, alum. wheels, 35PSI). If you are getting 9mpg, somthing is wrong or you drive like a bat out of hell!

I get somewhere between "awful" and "are you ****ing kidding me". This is in top tune. Otherwise I start figuring it in gallons per mile.

kidding aside - about 8 - 12 for a factory carbrurated 2F.

I just drove my 60 on the longest trip I have ever have and with the H55f, 3.7s, 33's, and stock carb desmoged I got an average 17.4 mpg on a 279 mile trip running between 65-78 mph. This thursday I will drive another 200 miles to CMCC so I will make sure it is getting that kind of milage.

I drove my FJ60 from Dallas to Denver last summer and got 17 MPG loaded down with gear. I still can't figure out how my fuel economy was that good. I guess the HAC valve modulated the fuel/air mixture at elevation and gave me better economy; who knows.

Are you guys serious your my 60 has 30s and stock every thing (thats means its never had anything more than a tune up) and it runs ok not good 106k miles i just got 14 mpg that was highway drivein 60-75 mph and city 30ish i had 265 miles on that tank before i filled up (i put in 17.77 gallons 85 octane) that means i had about 6 gallons left in the tank!!! 265 miles on 18 gallons. i also ran it for about 30 min trying to fix the ac in it just sitting there in the shop. i cant believe what i could get with a proper tune up and carb rebuild and a desmog would do for me.

I will find out soon again after tires were upgraded to 33" KM2......but I know around town in traffic with air conditioner it takes a big dive. I will fill up and check it when I get back from Ouray CO in my FJC in couple weeks.

Sorry if this question was asked somewhere in the 6 pages of emails...that I skipped...but how are you guys doing the math on the mpg? Are you taking the factory specs on tank size and dividing there? That can't be right as mine holds over 19 gal when i run it down.

I'm curious what you guys get on a full tank.....mine is always around 210 miles on a tank. Not a big difference, but 10 something or about 11.5 is what I see depending on the math. I'm just curious if there's a standard way of measuring or something.

You have to fill your tank to when the pump automatically shuts off at full. Then the next time you fill up all the way to when the pump shuts off automatically, you use that number of gallons that were pumped in. The nozzle on the gas pump fills up to basically the same spot, if you just fill it to that point (not topping it off.) Tank size is 23.8 gallons. Most people don't run it down that far.

Cardinal,

How do you like the 4.11's with the H55 and 33's? I have the same set up, but with 3.70's. Is first gear usable around town? Do you take off from a stop sign in first or second gear? Did the 4.11's help your on highway grade climbing?

End of Hi-Jack... On the highway with a fair load, roof rack and mileage measured by my GPS, I'm getting between 12.5 and 15, around town less, offroad...not too good! But, with the stock tank and my saddle tank (44 gals) I can travel a minimum of 400 and up to well over 600.

Thanks

Doug
