Request for Measurement: Wiper arm link lengths

I need the exact measurements (center of eye to center of eye) on both wiper link rods.

Does anybody have a link assembly laying around for measurement?

If your wipers don't "park" at the bottom of the glass after you have body work done, check to see if the link rods have been mutilated! A change in length (shortening) due to the links being bent causes the wipers to park above the lowest point of sweep.

I took photos and am willing to post them if anyone's interested.

Thanks to all,

Rick

Sorry, I trashed my old ones ofter I got a replacement from orangefj45. I'm willing to yank my good ones out tomorrow evening if you don't get what you need before then.

I would like to see pics of what you're talking about with regards to the wipers not parking at the bottom. I always assumed mine slipped ever so slightly back up due to not attaching them to the motor just right.

Do your wipers work their way up over a period of time or do they stop higher than the lowest point of the sweep right when you switch them off?

No creep over time. They stop just higher than the lowest point in their motion. It's slight, but enough to bug me.

That's exactly what I am working on. I am working on a truck that had normal wiper operation before some body work, but afterwords the wipers park about 3" above the lowest point of the sweep. It is really annoying, both because the truck works well otherwise and because it wasn't that way before they worked on it.

I Investigated the install. The motor runs and stops at the exact point repeatedly. The wiper shafts and link bushings are tight.

The motor side link looks like it was put in a vise and hammered. It appears the body shop installed the system incorrectly and it bound the link, bending it under the torque of the motor.

I am focused on this affecting the proper operation, based on the postulation that if this link is slightly short, due to being bent, the wipers will be pulled further downwards (at the outside of the wiper motor crank circle) than they are supposed to be. By the time the wiper motor reaches the park position, the wiper arm has just passed the furthermost point of the circle by a few degrees, thus raising the wipers a bit just before they shut off.

I get:
21 1/4" for passenger side link
26 1/2" for drivers side link

For me, I think clocking the mount to the motor just slightly will correct the issue.

Thread revival warning!!!

I finally got my computer repaired and am able to post photos of how I found solutions to this wiper problem.

As you recall, this truck, after getting the works at a body shop, was returned to the owner with wipers that parked about 3" above the lowest point of sweep. I found this to be annoying and received his authorization to rectify the problem.

First, here are photos of the arms, compared to known good parts. The rods with red paint over spray on them are the correct form. There is a slight bend missing from the center rod. The beefier primary rod, which connects the motor to the first wiper crank comes from the factory all distorted and crushed! I thought I was looking at body shop damage! I take back all the negative karma I put out there, and move on to the real culprit.

The real culprit is (was) the clocking. Butt Ugly Chuck, move to the front of the class, you were right on!

The correct clocking can be observed on the known good motor with the red wire covering. The difference in the wiper motor arm position as seen on the subject motor equaled about 3' of wiper blade movement past the lowest position on the glass.

The motor shaft is made with a spline without any keying to index the position. I corrected the position, returned the bend to the small rod, and replaced the large, ugly rod (due to damaged plastic joints) the wipers worked perfectly.

If you guys want your wipers to keep on wiping, and you want them to park where they should, use this thread and the pics as your guide. I had the system out of its cavity in ten minutes. I lubed the cranks and joints, corrected the timing and had it reinstalled in an hour. This is not rocket surgery or brain science, folks!

So looking at the wiper motor arm it needs to be at the 3 oclock position?

Ah mate, your RHD truck will make a liar out of me. Maybe 9:00 for your purpose?

I set it up in the lower photo showing a ruler laying on the motor mounting plate bottom mounting hole centers. The arm is parallel to the ruler, clocked inboard, towards the wiper rods.
