New FJ62!

Just bought a 89 FJ 62 recently, this is my first cruiser. Its got 117k and is bone stock except for a new exhaust. I need help on a few things.

1. the first time i filled the take it overflowed and left a strong gas smell in the back right interior panel....i had to remove the panel and clean it out with soap and water to get the smell out. Anyone know what that is about? Do i need a vented gas cap?

2. Would like to replace the headliner and carpet. Any good sites to visit to order these things?

3. Check engine light - this comes on after about 30 min of highway driving. Any experience with this?

Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome - and here's the official IH8MUD salute: .

As for the tech, I can't help you, I'm a newbie compared to most of these guys. I will follow this thread, tho, because I have the same petrol problem. After a fill up, especially on a hot day, I get a spill into the right rear 1/4 panel. I can't find any leaks in any of the hoses, and search didn't show anything on the forum.

For other tech, read thru all the threads in the FAQ sticky. Lots of brilliant info.

First of all, that is one clean looking 62. Welcome to the board. Start at the top of this forum and skim through the FAQ section. There’s a lot of good information. The next thing is to learn how to use the search function. Between those two tools you can answer the easy stuff. If you plan on working on this truck yourself you need to get a FSM (factory service manual.) call your local dealer and they can point you in the right direction to order one.

Answers to your questions:
  • I have an 88 FJ62 and I don’t need a vented gas cap. Check the fuel fill neck. You might just need to tighten the hose clamps. Worse situation you may have a hole or leak somewhere which would require you to replace the filler neck (easy to do.) Side Note: Don’t overfill or top off your truck. Getting gas too high up will leak into your fuel vapor lines and cause problems.
  • There are many vendors that can replace the carpet. Someone can chime in more on that as I have not done it. The headliner from what I’ve heard can be quite difficult to replace. Specter Offroad (SOR) in Chatsworth, California sells a headliner replacement. I’m sure other do venders offer kits but I don’t know who.
  • If the check engine light is coming on my guess would be O2 sensor. Hard to tell before diagnosing the problem. You need to get a paperclip and go through the instructions to get the code from your truck. Your check engine light will blink in a certain pattern letting you know which code is going off. Search the forum on how to get this code from your truck, there are way better threads than me explaining it. The FSM also tells you how to do this.

Things to check since you’re the new owner:

Oil Galley Plug: needs to be removed and replaced, the hole tapped, and a proper plug installed. If your oil galley plug comes out while you’re driving the oil in your truck rushes out and you burn a perfectly good motor. Do a search on this, also in FAQ I believe.

Fluids: When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed? The trany can last well over 250,000 mi if taken care of, i.e. routine fluid changes.

Trany Cooler: Most guys who own 62’s on this board install trany coolers. It costs less than $100 after everything and it keeps your trany from overheating when it’s working hard. Less heat directly helps the longevity of your cruiser.

Ask tons of questions even if you think they’re stupid. People here are great and have a wealth of knowledge.

Very nice 62. Welcome!

I'm not sure on the 62s, but on the 60s there are some vent hoses inside the PS rear panel (accessed from inside the rear cargo area). They can develop a leak. The panel will pop off for inspection.

Do a search here and order the original Toyota Factory Service Manuals for your truck. They will show you how to troubleshoot the check engine light.

X2 on the tranny cooler and new fluid if it hasn't been done before.

Welcome to Mud... our wagons are twins.

Is there any seepage around the base of the filler neck? I was getting a lot of water in my rear quarter after rain and it was coming from around the base of the filler neck, a little JB weld and no more issues. This would probably only be the case if you were overfilling the tank though...

As a previous poster stated, try the paperclip trick to what codes are contributing to the check engine light.

Definitely install an aftermarket transmission cooler if one is not already installed and purchasing an FSM is not a bad idea if you plan to tinker on it yourself.

not sure about your tank, but here is the link to the gas tank recall:

Recall Results : ODI - Office of Defects Investigation

some have had this replaced for free by the stealership, others have been given the runaround. I have not tried yet...It says in the document that they are susposed to fix it for free.

Welcome, join a club ,good source for help and fun. I agree on the O2 sensors but test them first. These cars run forever if you keep them cool.Replace all fluids and hoses and belts when you get the time and money. 2 cents Mike

if we filled the tank on our 60 it would vent fuel out the filler under presure eventually found that the vent filter on the charcoal canister was rusted blocked causing tank to over pressure and vented over the new paint cleared out the breather on the canister and seems to fix the problem im in aus. our 60 has 2 charcoal canisters under the bonnet dont no if yours is the same

Very clean sweet looking rig. Sorry...I'm of no help as I'm a 100 series guy. However, I will own a 60/62 & 80 one of these days. Now I just need to convince the wife. Oh yeah, and welcome to the dark side. All your disposable income will soon be gone with the addiction. It doesn't matter if it's a 40, 55, 60, 62, 80, 100, etc...PM & mods cost $. The good part is you are part of something special, and your truck will last as long as you want it to.

I noticed TX tags....where in Texas? A lot of us in the DFW and Austin areas. We've all probably got an FSM and can help you with that check engine light code in a few minutes. Typical price is about a 6 pack of something micro-brewed....

If you're in Dallas, I'd be glad to help out a bit.
