fj60 project "NEED MORE POWER"
i started this project for a customer a couple of weeks ago. the 2F was getting tired so instead of rebuilding or replacing it. we decided to go with something a little more "up-to-date".
so out came the 2f and the frame rails got cleaned up ready for something new.

we settled on a 5.3 vortec from a 2007 tahoe. this should fit the bill. along with the engine we're going to run the 4l65e transmission and the stock split case via an AA adapter.
the engine will be supported by a set of FcFabrication custom engine mounts because we need them to last and not sag out or split like some of the "over the counter mounts" out there.
the transmission and t-case will also receive a custom Fc mount/skid plate.
here's a pic of the engine roughly where it's going to end up.

that outta do it, should'nt it?!
i still need to button up a few loose ends on the magnacharger itself. then i'll need to lower the engine some more in the chassis to get the proper hood clearance. to do so i have an oil pan and pickup from a camaro to gain some more pan to front diff clearance.

this engine's gonna put out well over 400hp so we're going to need some solid mounts. son's will do the job.

that's funnay. my wife used to "practice" for her barrel races by riding a wild, unbroken jackass bareback and holding on to his main ( sp?! ) to get better at balancing.
and why yes, every 60 outa have a blower on it! that way they can actually join the rest of the world in the passing lane.

could be better but i've seen worse with the 4BTs. the engine will move back and down some more. in order to get this done i will change the oil-pan and the ps pump since it's getting awful close to the ps box. so we're opting for a tc style pump with the remote reservoir.
when it's all said and done, the hood will close the way it's siupposed to. no blower scoop here.......

haha, did'nt take me long to say "sure we can do that" when the customer approached me with the build plans. best part is that this will be smog legal in CA. can't wait to go for the first test drive in this rig.

And I thought I was going to see a 60 with a 2" cowl. Oh well, guess I'm going to have to wait on that one. How many lbs is that thing going to blow? And have you completely rebuilt everything in back of it? I can see a twisted drive shaft or a broken axle in that thing's future.

nope, stock for now. we'll see if and what breaks but the owner is a pretty sensible guy. i know, the blower might contradict that statement but he's not a 19 year old throttle jockey.

i've seen a 60 with a 2" cowl/scoop and it looked like crap.
the engine and trans combo have less than 15k miles on them. the trans will be checked out extremely thoroughly when we go to replace the output shaft. the t-case will be completely rebuilt. i'm a little concerned about the rear axle shafts but we'll most-likely end up running a set of polys in there to prevent finding them to be the weak link in other ways.
i also plan on running a track-bar to prevent axle wrap and possible pinion breakage.

I guess he is not going to wheel it much? The 400hp will kill birfs even longs.

don builds these mounts one at a time. he does not sell them in kit form, they're too specific for each application and he hates producing kits. to say that he takes pride in his work would be an understatement. so he's not too keen to produce a kit at the risk of an end-user doing less than stellar finish work. bad welds would bum him out, especially on one of his creations. so no kits. if the vehicle is not at our shop, he won't build mounts or skid plates for it. too many variables........
as for wheeling, this 60 will be mostly street driven and will go on some mild trail rides up in the sierras, but no rubicon trips or such.

That maggie will really help with low end power. Keeping stock pulley on it? Who is going to do the tuning on the pcm? I would upgrade the clutches and band with a shift kit to keep the tranny good for a long time.

That's what I was thinking.,
We'd better get a video or two of some 4WD donuts when this build is done.

the supercharger came with a tuner and lots of info/instructions. i ordered it thru another shop that specializes in supercharging late model engines so i could get good tech support.
as for the trans, i spent 12 years of my professional life in the transmission industry. so the trans will get the "full treatment" including a ceramic double bearing supported lockup clutch in the converter, kevlar extra wide band, billet drum, all kevlar or blue plate frictions, a mild shift kit, .......you get the picture.
i'm not going to hot-rod the engine too much because this rig needs to remain very streetable and reliable. so i'm building it accordingly.

got some more work done today. i had to remove the tahoe style oil pan to get more clearance, so i ordered a new gm cast pan for an ls1 in a camaro along with the proper pickup. this gains you about 3.5" extra clearance. it's still going to be tight with the minimal lift but it'll work just fine.
here are a couple of pics of both pans so you can get a rough idea.
