window felt replacement
Ok I am ready to replace my old leaking window felt. Inside and out. I looked on the SOR site and am unsure of what to get. I may just call CDan and get it from him, but if you call him and dont have your ducks in a row he gets a bit ornary. Any help? I was thinking while I had them off I could sand and paint the chrome strips.

Could you post up the part numbers and the cost if possible? I was thinking about doing the same thing...

I have an fj62 and ordered those parts from Dan. The outer felt strips come with the chrome piece that runs at the base of the window along the top of the door. You can't buy them separate, and they are close to $100 each! After discussing my options with Dan, I ultimately ordered a different part number he had that was an fj60 number and mucho cheaper. I think they must be for maybe an older fj60 that didn't come with the chrome strips along the bottom of the window. I took the chrome pieces off, and the outer felt strips snap into holes that were already in the door instead of fastening to the chrome strip. They worked great, but you won't have the chrome strips anymore, and will have to deal with any issues you find under the strips. In my case I am repainting, so it is not an issue. Anyway, if you choose to go the route I went, here are the part numbers I ordered:
Inside weatherstripping
68170-90A01 2ea.
68190-90A01 2ea.
Outside weatherstripping
68160-90A02
68210-90A02
68230-90A01
I lost the part number for the fourth one, but you should get close enough with these for Dan to figure out what the last one is.

You can install the outer weatherstrip without the chrome?!? That's fantastic news.

thanks SLC! I am torn down on my 84 60 prepping for paint now (still i should say), and would love to replace the felt while at it. I was going to paint the chrome black, but this i think will look better!
Gracias!

Well Cdan is sending me the goods. Do you notice that most things for the cruiser run about 200.00 on average? Its weird. I am doing all door inner and outer and passenger window channel ( its buggered up), I threw in plugs, air filter, and a fan clutch just to keep me busy.

I'd love to lose the chrome on mine as well. I may have to do this when I eventually get around to ordering new window channels.

Thanks for the part numbers... is there any way that I can get you to post some pics of the windows without the bottom chrome?

My Cruiser just went into paint, so I can't do any pics until I get it back. I did a test fit on one of the doors right after I got the fj60 stuff. Once you take the chrome strip off, the fj60 outer felt pieces have plastic clips that snap into some holes already in the door just inside the top of the outer lip. They will overlap the top of the door edge about 3/8 to 1/2 inch as I recall. It really is a perfect fit. And those nasty chrome strips are asta la bye bye. I'll post up pics as soon as I can, but someone else might get to it before I do.

I should reiterate that the outer felt strips that work without the chrome strips are not the same as the felt strips that work with the chrome pieces. So don't think you can pull the chrome strips off and separate the felt from the chrome and then put the felt pieces back on the door. That won't work. The part numbers I listed are for the felt strips that work without the chrome. And I might add that the chrome strips are held in place by some plastic clips inside the door that come off by tapping them down with a screw driver. They are old and some of them will break, so you may not be able to put the the chrome strips back on. The good news is that while they are still available, the felt strips that work without the chrome are in the $20 dollar and cheaper range instead of the $100 range for the chrome strips/felt combo.

Got my felt from Cdan. Did 3 doors and it started to lightning. No more chrome strip on bottom window. Good thing to, potential rust hazard under there. Oiled the inside of the doors for good measure (while I was in there).

This is fantastic. One less bit of chrome. Now if I paint/powdercoat the license plate lamp assembly and the door handles, there will be no chrome left but the locks, and I can live with that.
Anybody got the window weather stripping part numbers (not the inside and outside sill strips) but the U shaped piece that goes into the door, surrounding the windows. $59.39 each at SOR...
I have seen the thread on the JCWhitney versions, but I'm sticking with OEM on this...

Tofude, do you mean the piece that has the chrome insert? I have been looking at that and wondering if it came out easily. I to do the passenger side window guide tonight , I will look at the piece and see how many bananas it takes.

When you replace the window channel in the front doors, be sure and NOT cut it where the old one was cut. I ran the long strip (part number 30 in the diagram in post 21) as far down the front of the door as it would go, and cut the short piece (part number 34 in the diagram) to fit. That way, the joint is way down in the door, and not up where you can see it and water can be channeled in.

Pics
Ok I finished the last door today and also ran the window trim. The window channel (part 30) went down enough that I was able to remove the old cut piece. There was maybe 4" at the bottom- the window didn't move. Let me say the difference is dramatic, the window seals so well I am going to do the other doors. The felt also makes a huge difference and it seems alot tighter against water. Mind you I know water will still get in , but nothing like it did before. I will have to clay bar the area that was previously covered to get the bit of wax and dirt off of the paint. I just painted in 2007 so your under chrome results may differ.....
Here are the pics
The front with chrome strip still on
Front and rear comparison
Drivers side done with no more chrome strips...I just noticed the reflection of some one legged bastard
Drivers side close up
Check under your door panels every so often...rust never sleeps
Feeding window channel rubber
It fits in very easy
Clipping outside felt in
Just push until it clicks and your done

Titanium?
What was the total cost (the felt/weatherstripping, not the leg)?
You have some chrome to remove around the windows there, sir.
You wanna powdercoat those door handles now too, huh?
Last Q: Respray? The condition of your paint kicks the shit out of mine (same color).

Yes to Titanium- with elevated vacuum
Total cost for all four doors was around 200.00 through Cdan.
I looked at the chrome on the doors and I always thought they somehow were structural, can I just take them off? what is underneath? painted? do you have pics of yours?
as far as paint I had them wetsand the orange peel out. It made the paint a little thin but looks much better....and clay bar and consistent wax helps alot for maintanence.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread-- i was just taking the chrome trim pieces off the bottom of the doors and was curious to why the stock felts wouldnt work without the chrome pieces? they snap in the same as the ones show and have the same coverage.

They are not the same on an fj62. But, since the replacements with out the chrome are an fj60 part, you may be able to do that.

I have pulled the chrome around the top off of mine - i'll try to find a pic and post it for you. Mine are sanded and prepped for paint... but other than that you should get the idea.
As for the window channel along the top - was your old channel really beat up, or...? I think mine's pretty good shape, but knowing how much the door seals help, i wonder if this would be a good one for soundproofing better.

Hey smokey - another Q -
Did they come with the clip shown here? It has to help to use these plastic clips instead of the original *usually partially rusting* metal clips.
thx!
