Finished with the prep work for the axle rebuild today. I hot tanked everything that would fit and then sand blasted the housing and painted it. Now, all the parts are clean and primed. I'm gana throw a coat of flat black on everything and then I should be ready to reassemble once the Aussie lockers come in. I'm using the FJ housing and the third from the HJ (fine spline 4.11)

That speed blaster is something else, isn't it? I only wish it held more media.
Looking great! Keep up the good work.

Great Project
Im not sure if you decided on what tyre, but in markets like Africa and Australia, low spec landcruisers are sold with 750x16 LT tyres new.
All the big and most of the small tyre compmanies make a tyre this size.
You can also use the 235x85x16 tyre on the same rim if thats all thats availble.
These sizes can be bought with ANY type tread pattern from road to quarry tyres.
Dyna trucks and Coaster buses and other japanese trucks and buses also run this size in the 3rd world

How long did it take you to blast that axle with the speed blaster? That is one clean axle.

About 30 minutes. I used a scrapper to get the inch thick grease/mud cake off and then hit it with the blaster. The local contractor supply store sells 100# bags of the sand for $6 and the axle took somewhere in the neightborhood of 20-30# of sand.

The hopper size is definitely the biggest draw back...
I keep thinking it should have a "ghost-busters" style backpack full of media and then use venturi to bring it into the gun.
I need to patent that idea.

Yeah man, or at least a hopper to load it quicker. I hate loading that damn thing with a cup.

We prepared the surface for Rhino Lining by first scrapping up ALL the insulation (using a heat gun is really helpful here) and then sanding the surface. The following pictures are of the prepared surface and everything plastic wrapped waiting for the spray. More to come...

Here are pics from tonight's kinda "rhino-lining". The spray crap didn't work / Travis couldn't find the activator so we wound up using a roll on type that we added extra rubber scraps too. I think its gana come out pretty well all things considered. At the end of the day, this lining doesn't have to put up to weather, just feet, so I think were gana be okay here =)
By the way, I'd like to give a quick "shout-out" to the two other Toyota guys who are helping me head up this project; most of the guys in the shop have been / are helping, but these two guys are doing much of the leg work with fundraising and planning along side me. They have been a huge help

Discouraging weekend... First of all: My thermometer said it was 102 yesterday so it was pretty much unbearable outside. We pulled both thirds from the HJ and they are 3.73. I thought that all HJ's had 4.11. Turns out only the automatic had 4.11. So now we are in search of a set of FJ62 thirds (or other fine spline pinion 4.11"s) If you have a set you want to donate, PM me.
More to come this week I hope

Using coarse spline thirds should be fine with expedition style driving. Swap out the flanges and you're golden.

How big a tire are you planning to run? Why not keep the 3.70s? You'll get better mileage, which I expect is more important in Africa.

33" Its gana be slightly too tall. I don't want whoever is operating to have to slip the clutch for 5 minutes every time they are starting off.

Have you ever driven a H55 with 33's and 3.73's? It feels pretty normal to me.
Definitely don't need to slip the clutch for 5 minutes to get it started, but then again you will be loaded to the gills for this expedition.

x2 also a 33" tire is not too easy to get in Africa
I agree with roscoFJ73 although nice to have 33" it would make more sence to get a 7.50x16
and would recomend also split rims...you can just pop down to you tire shop in Africa...alot will have to be done on the road.
GREAT BUILD

Yes I have, and I would have no problem driving it that way. However, I'm not the one driving it. Were trying to build it as stupid proof as possible.

We are sending them with 8 33" tires on 16" split rims (assuming we can find some for a reasonable price). Were going to run the tires with tubes for easy side-of-the-road repair. If for some reason they destroy all 8 tires, they will have the option of getting tires locally.

Just an update, we are going to have more pics to come, Josh Zuluzeugma just got married and is a little pre occupied at the moment! We have ordered axle rebuild supplies and like everywhere the bearings where out of stock!
Both axles are off the truck, ready for a rebuild and we are now waiting for a lift kit- if anyone knows of someone that is trying to sell one we could use the help. Also we have been working on getting a snorkel with no luck at this point. Our goal is to get this thing rolling but gotta get the lift first!

i don't know how much you are trying to lift, but wc supply over on front street in tyler can re-arch and add leaves to the stack you already have. can lift it 2-3" easy. 1 leaf per inch.
can be a bit pricy going that way, we use to charge about $100 per stack.
if you are over that way drop in the back and ask for danny. tell him bufe sent you by, and what you're needing. he might be able to get you a price break.
edit: that's pronounced b ewe f
