Power Steering Pump Priming

I just installed a new Power Steering pump. Yup, I sprung for a new Toyota pump from cruiser Dan. I had to do the whole "take the bracket off with pump" method. Also had to pull the smog pump to get at the bracket.

Now I have a horrible grinding noise from either the PS pump or the gearbox when turning the wheel. The factory pump came with PS fluid in it already. I just bolted it in, connected the high pressure line, connected the return line, topped off with a little more ATF fluid, and started to try and prime the pump.

Is this noise while priming normal?
I have turned the wheel back and forth at least 20 times and still the noise is there. I am trying to get a little better idea of priming should be done. I don't want to do anything stupid and brake a brand new PS pump.

I just installed ps on my 40 this morning. All i did was pour fluid in, turn the truck on, turn the wheel, turn the truck off, add more fluid, and so on. It would make noise when the pump ran out of fluid thats when i knew to go add more. It took about a 1 quart to fill the pump and gear box and about 3 min to get it full.

ps pump

Sounds like you have air in the lines and box. Jack up the front enough to clear the tires, start the engine and turn the steering wheel back and forth. That should bleed the air out.

X2. Do a full "running bleed" of the PS system while keeping an eye on the fluid level and just keep turning the wheel back and forth while holding at full travel each side for a few seconds. Keep this up until the "stiff spot" in the middle and any grinding noise goes away.

like others have said:

Jack frontend up where tires off ground., top off ps fluid.... start engine. Turn sterring slowly full left and then full right....multiple times.... over and over. Stop engine and check fluid (repeat two or three times) or until noise goes away.

Noisy pump

I just recently replaced my pump with a factory one and it took about a month to get all the air out of the system. I just had to top off the fluid every day just a bit and eventually the noise just went away. I tried the lift the front end method and either I didn't do it right which is possible or it just didn't work for me. Although having a friend turn the wheels back and forth while I was up front topping the fluid off helped a lot in the beginning. In the end it just took a bit of time to get all the air out.

I have been trying bleed my PS system for a couple weeks now. Spent all day Saturday and it still is not fully bled. Others have had similar issues. I haven't found an end all be all solution either. It just seems some systems are harder to get the air out. Some of us just seem to be unlucky.

It is frustrating the S*** out of me.

See first post for my method of bleeding the p/s pump. I first used a reman pump (which was defective) and could not get it to bleed using any number of methods. With a new OEM pump from CDan, I used the method as I posted it. No groans or wookie noises at all.

Best of luck!

Well I got it primed and on the road without any more noises. jacking it up definitely sped up the process. I had heard that about ten turns should be enough, well I would estimate that I turned that wheel from lock to lock at least 35 times with wheels on the ground and another 30 times with the wheels off the ground before mine was fully primed.

During the install I had knocked some fluid out of the return hose, maybe 10cc. Not sure if that is why mine seemed to take so long to bleed. Good luck to all with the same problem. Keep on turning.

I'm surprised to hear there was fluid already in the new Toy pump. My surprise stems from EPA regs that usually get spouted when I've asked about shipping parts with fluids still in em.

Something that hasn't been mentioned here and should be is Do Not turn all the way up against teh steering stops! That cavitates the pump, which put air back IN the fluid. Stop turning and reverse direction just short of hitting the steering stops.
