grinding noise in 4 wheel drive

it snowed last night so naturally i locked in the hubs for the slick roads this morning. when i put it in 4x4 the cruiser makes a loud grinding noise. if i leave the hubs locked in and leave it out of 4 wheel drive (the front driveline spinning) the noise goes away. also if i am driving with the rpm's up a bit so there is pressure on the system the noise goes away. it makes the noise loud and clear when i am decelerating or when i press the clutch to shift. any thoughts? thanks in advance.

Sounds like a bearing in the nose cone (the front part of the t/c that hooks up to the driveshaft).

so does that mean rebuild?

Probably not. My 3sp (different than the split t/c on your 60) had a bad bearing in the nose cone. We pulled the cone off to get at the bearing. Pulled off the bad one, put on the new one.
