easy gearing swap, swap third members from 62 to 60?
Sorry if this is a silly question. I've searched and couldn't find what I was exactly looking for, but I want to regear the stock 3.7 gears to 4.11's to help run 33 inch tires.
Can i simply buy the 3rd members from a 62 from cruiserparts.net and stick them in my 60 axle without having to send anything out to be redone?
Seems like this may be the cheapest method as the 3rd members are only about 200 bucks.
Differentials are a complete 3rd member take out. 81-87 get better low end gearing with a 4:1 unit / 88-90 get better mileage with a 3:7 unit. Third member / Differential /3.7 81 - 87 Complete, Tested, 90 day warranty. FREE S/H $200 Third member / Differential/ 4.1 88 - 90 Complete, Tested, 90 day warranty. FREE S/H $200

Yup. I would look for some in the classifieds here though (parting trucks) might save some coin on purchase price, find something close to home to avoid shipping, and not have to deal with a vendor that has a spotty record.
Better yet, you have your diffs regeared to 4.56 and send them my way, I'll send you my 4.1s on a straight exchange. I'll even handle the shipping (provided June works for you)

The diffs are a direct swap but the bolt pattern of the driveshaft flange may not match that of the pinion.

Im looking at replacing the 3.7's in my HJ60 with 4.11's from a 1986 HJ61. The HJ60 is a Jap 24V imported to Oz, with 33.5x12.5x15's.
Dont know if the FJ's are the same as the HJ's, but on mine the bolt patterns look the same. I measured 65mm x 65mm on both flanges. HJ61 on left, and HJ60 on right (with leak)...

Hmm Does anyone know if the fj62 pinion matches an 83 fj60 driveshaft flange?
Klingon how involved is swapping out the flanges/pinion?
Also I'm assuming you need to pull the birf's out when installing the new third, so It would benefit me to do this all at once while I'm rebuilding the front knuckles/ inner axle seal?

yes you need to pull front and rear axles out so any birf/ bearing/ brake work that needs to be done now is a good time. You can also just redrill the flanges for the new pattern. Easy to do if you pull the driveshaft and use it as a pattern and drill them on the bench rather than under the rig!

When you are looking for complete third members, the ones from a 40 series work as well... but, most were course spline (not all), the wagons, and I could be wrong here, were fine spline. This will make a difference if your trying to swap pinion flanges.

You're in Glendale? Sheesh! and you were gonna buy from CruiserParts in NH - Man, you've got a Landcruiser guru in your backyard (with lots of parts stuffed into every crack he's got)
Marks Off Road Home Page in BURBANK
Call him between 1pm - 6, leave a msg if he doesn't answer.
Also, I'm in Encino and I've got a front 4:11 sitting in my garage, cheap. I did this swap on mine for 33" tires and ended up having to buy 3
BUT - I would recommend at least having the 3rds checked. I used two fronts, with low mileage, but they were tired. Having them rebuilt while they were out was good money spent and there's a top-notch place in Downey?
Edit: Performance 4 Wheel Drive in Bellflower.

Pinion splines changed from coarse to fine 01/78 and the 4.11 gear ratio was used only to 12/78, where it changed to 3.70 in USA 40/55 series trucks....

They are not the same bolt pattern.
01/74-08/84 are the same bolt pattern, however, pinion companion flanges prior to 01/78 will be coarse spline.
09/84-01/90 are the same bolt pattern and are compatible with fine spline pinions.

Thanks guys, a wealth of knowledge.
I tried calling Mark way back when I had my 62 for some work and he didn't seem to be interested since it was a 62..... So I hadn't considered he might carry the 4.11 thirds, but called right now and seems like he has a bunch. Time to pay him a visit now that I'm crusing in a 60.
thanks everyone!!
Btw am I going to need any special tools to install the third that i pickup? I think they sell installation kits but not sure if thats necesary?

You know, Kevin, depending on the cost of the FJ62 3rds, I found it would have been a better value to just get my 3.73 diffs regeared and rebuilt for the same money - then you'll have the proper flanges, too.
You're gonna have to swap the flanges, anyway, which means probably replacing the pinion seal, and having the pinion preload set, too.

Hmmm
I was thinking if I have the stock thirds regeared and rebuilt it was going to come out to be around $700 per axle? not including the shipping to ZUK in arizona. am I way off?
compared to $375 for a good condition third from Mark.
As for the flange I was thinking of drilling the holes, or Mark said they might line up so I was probably going to go by and check them out when I had the chance.
hmm you got me thinking now... maybe Its worth the extra $ for a fresh rebuild in the long run..

No, I think it would be more like $400-500 per axle. That's about $250 labor + parts. Bearing kit is about $120 (Koyo bearings), and about $125? for Ring and Pinion. It would be another $100 bux for shipping to ZUK, each diff.
I installed a rear locker at the same time, but I think ZUK chared $250 for a full gear install + price of parts, about another 250 for gear, pinion, bearings, seals... But it was virtually NEW when done. I supplied the bearing and seal kit from $OR.
If I were to do it over, I would have had my 3rds rebuilt instead of trying to find good FJ62 front diffs and then having to have those reblt..
Just my .02
You might want to call performance 4 wheel drive in Bellflower and get prices from them.
But if Mark's are ready to run, that's easy, too.

I could be wrong, but when I had my thirds rebuilt the carrier bearings were expensive. I mentioned to the builder that the bearings might only be available from Toyota, he laughed and said bearings could be acquired from a wholesaler. In the end he had to get the bearings from Toyota. Guaranteed the bearings are probably a Koyo, but he couldn't find a match. In Canada there's no benefit with shipping from $OR.
I think I paid $600.00/dif. + tax. (CDN)

Is that $375 for two 4.11 thirds?

I know it can't be done with you since you have 2 thirds and have no idea what end of the Cruiser they came from, but a tip for those swapping 3rd members....
Use the FRONT from the donor vehicle in the REAR of your vehicle.
Here's why, with the hubs unlocked the front 3rd does not get much use so it is nearly new on most vehicles if it has been properly maintained.

also you can use R&P out of a 80 series rear end, I got a pair of them in my fj60,one set of gears were free from Junk, other came out of my 80 when I regeared it.
4;11's and 33x10.5's are a very nice combo, not sure I would go 4:56 unless your wheeling it alot

He will never know it is there until he needs it
The downside to an autolocker in the front is the constant strain on the birfs and steering. FJ60 steering is weak already, add an autolocker and it is a bear. Hydroassist and Longfields are your friend

Don't forget new gaskets! and getting the old ones off is a B*tch!
I had to use a wire wheel on an angle grinder, under the rig it's no fun getting it off around the differential studs

Even with the entire housing out of the 60 and on a workbench, I had troubles to finally get a good clean finish on the centre gasket face. I used a small JOSCO wire-wheel with a large corded drill.
Doing the job under the 60 - I can't begin to imagine the pain !!
