| I'm with cruiser_guy on the tires....
But then again, I don't go over 65 and mostly drive @ 58 mph.... (on my 60). And I normally go by wear on the tire. And I have even bought used ones for 20 bucks while I get new ones. But then again... You guys have got me thinking... Mostly all of my flats have been because of metal debree on the road. And once, only once, it was becase on metal showing on my old prizm.
But I am running low... and will have to purchase a couple soon.

I did wear the tires down on my wife's car until the steel belt popped out, I think it was time to get new tires at that point

| Oh, and the old tire thing.....
That was the demise of those uber-cool 275x85x16s I was running on the 45 last year. Succumbed to age. IIRC, I orginally purchased them in 1994. They only had about 5k on them.
I began to sense there was a problem when the one of the tires got a leak...from the inside out! Patched it, drove to the 45 run, ran the trail. Drove home. By the time I got back to L.A. two of the tires had football shaped bulges in the sidewall, a clear sign of tread separation. No flats or blowouts, but they went bye-bye last September.
The cool thing about this was that they had been on my FJ60 when the buyer first saw it. I told him I would not sell him the truck with those tires on it because they were old, and I put a 'newer' set of tires on before I delivered the truck to him.

Yet. | What do you mean "if" we make it? This is merely about the 15th time through Mexico (and I'm not talking a day trip to Tijuana). We plan to cross at Juarez in mid-June (no flak jackets or body armor though ). From there we're heading to Phoenix and we'll be in LA again southbound in early August.
I'll keep an eye on the tires for bulges in the sidewalls or any sign of tread separation. I really don't want to buy new tires now as I have a set waiting for me in Portland, OR.
