Defroster blowing oily (antifreeze?) film.
My windshield stays fogged up (on the inside) all the time, even when other cars are not fogged. I have to wipe it with a towel often. The residue seems to be oily, not just wet. Smells maybe like antifreeze. Is there any way antifreeze can leak somewhere and blow up onto the windshield? Also, have a small antifreeze leak from the black plastic heater box, just above the T case shift lever. Where is this coming from? Are the two related? 82FJ60.

Sounds like your heater core is toast.

For the oil moisture on the window, heater core is most likely leaking and needs to be replaced.
In the back, there are two rubber hoses that connect the hard lines to the rear heater core. Check and see if they are soft and or leaking. Check and see if the floor around the rear heater is wet to make sure that the heater core isn't leaking. If you just need to replace the hoses, I used Napa part #11025 (need two). Nearly an exact match to the OEM hoses.

This is an extremely complex repair in the FJ60. So complex, that I have been putting it off! (One of my tubes is bent, but not leaking) The heater core has 2 attached brass tubes that go through the firewall. I would buy the orings that reseal those tubes before you dig into it. Essentially the whole dash has to come out to get to the core. One other thing. Be very careful with the brass tubes. I bought the last 2 in the USA parts chain thanks to CDan. I think the heater cores are available from Toyota and aftermarket.
For the hoses-just buy all new ones from Toyota, they arn't that expensive and will likely last 20 years like the originals.

What I did when mine started to leak is to pull the whole heater box out and have the two brass tubes brazed to the core. My leak was at the "O" ring that Andrew is talking about. You cannot access those "O" rings without pulling the heater box which means tearing apart the whole dash.
If you've got A/C you'll need to discharge that as well because the A/C evaporator is in the way of the heater box removal!
Plan on a very full day if the rad guy can fix your core right away. You'll be grateful if you've got the OEM shop manual as well.

It is a suck job. At least 2 days when all is said and done. Easy fix is to dress warm and open the winows!
