Rear Drums and the Emergency Brake

Anyone have any experience with the emergency break not working? It looks like the cable comes down the middle to the rear diff, then goes to each rear drum - through some "thing" with springs on it. I assume that it's some type of actuator? Anyway, I can move them by hammer - not by hand. It doesn't look like these are made to be replaced - what suggestions do I have?

Are you talking about the brake cable or the bell crank in the rear brake drum?

Looks like pieces 30, 31, 32, 24, and the spring (45) are the ones that are all frozen up.

if you're going to replace the bell crank and misc hardware you may want to replace the adjuster as well #52. Not that expensive. Also get #20 which plugs the hole in the rear of the brake for adjusting the adjuster.

get the parts and do it your self. I just spent 350.00 at Toyota because I needed my 4Runner as my DD. Not that hard to do.

I highly recommend driving with a e-brake always.. Also make sure you have the rubber caps (#20) that go in the holes for adjusting the shoes(#52). They help keep the dirt and water out of the brakes shoes.
