60's Vs 80's

Question.

I want to buy a Cruiser for hunting trips. Typically I would put 10-15K miles on it a year. I really like the looks of the 60 better than the 80 though.
Whatever I purchase typically will be with me for more than 10 years. What would you guys do? Do I purchase a truck that is over 15 years old, and keep it 10 more or so?
Will it be fairly easy to purchase parts for it?
If I purchased a 60 I would try and find one with low 100K miles on it. I have seen a few around.

Well this is typical personal taste. I have a diesel 60. Had I been able to get a diesel 80 I would have bought that instead. But then again that's me. The diesel aspect of it was more important to me than the body style. Parts for either isnt a problem. I dont think you are going to be that lucky to find a really low mile 60.

BUY THIS IF IT IS STILL AVAILABLE. Its a KILLER deal.

from what i have seen, 80s have better corrosion-engineering than 60s -- be it better sheet-metal, priming, painting, whatever --

-- there's a ton of things to think about here -- powertrain included -- the 3FE is a more proven powertrain than the 24V on the later 80s (headgasket failure), but it's not great on hills, b/c of the AWD --

-- who knows -- follow your heart, and the deals you find --

I picked up my '91 for $4,500 a year ago, and was lucky enough to get my '89 a couple of days ago for $3,700 --

-- the '89 has less miles than the '91 did, and it leaks none, which the '91 does -- same powertrain --

I love the 80s with the 3FE in them -- just personal preference --

There was a long recent thread on 60 vs 80. Lots of great opinions. Can't go wrong either way.

Bwaa haa haa--you should have made her take a dog in the deal!

Who the fawk calls in advice to these people? Either buy it or go away. . . . .

Grouseman, it's really up to you. They're both great trucks. The only thing I can say is 10k-15k a year for ten years is a lot of use. If you can do repair work yourself or don't mind paying someone else to do it, get a 60 if you like them. If you'd rather not bother with repairs, get the newest, lowest-mileage 80 series in your price range.

Either one will work great. I use my FJ60 primarily for bird hunting, camping, fishing trips, as you already know. I drive a lot on secondary (and non-exsistent) roads.

The stock 60 will not be passing a lot of vehicles on the freeway, and the 93 - 97 FJ80 will be better for freeway driving. Off the road, I like the lighter weight, leaf springs and manual transmission of the FJ60. Plus it has a higher cool factor.

I wishI only put on 10 to 15k a year! I average 22k a year and if I go on a vacation that adds another 3000. That's why I buy Toyota I guess!

Photogod,

The 10-15K miles a year are for play only. I usually drive 35K+ for work every year too.
