Wink ARB Air Locker PSI/SCFM

I hereby admit that I've come full circle & now understand the wisdom of the air locker. But I have another use for an on-board air supply: horns! So before I lay out $250 for an ARB compressor, I need to find out what the lockers themselves require & see if I can cobble up a compressor/air tank setup to power the lockers & a set of locomotive air horns.

There is a significant portion of the front-range Colorado driving population that believes that 50-60MPH is good in the left lane of the Interstate on dry roads with a posted 75MPH limit. I believe it is my right & obligation to inform them otherwise.

Im on my 4th rig with dual ARB's. So you can tell I like them. I love to wheel open most of the time with the knowledge that Im locked a button push away. That includes the Rubicon, Moab and all over Washington state. All that said, they require 90 PSI to engage. You really need some type of air tank. The stock ARB compressor has a small air tank. You'll be opening and locking them fairly regularly, so a tank really makes it doable.

Good luck. If you ever have technical questions about them, call Tim Lund at ARB in Seattle.

Tell him Tom Bentzen told you to call him. Tim is the Tech genious at ARB. He and I are old friends.

The flow rate (scfm) for the ARB locker is nearly 0. The storage tank on the ARB compressor is about the size of a 20 oz can of beans. Mine will engage the locker 2, maybe 3 times before the compressor needs to refill the tank so not much volume needed. For an air horn, I think you will need a larger tank - no firsthand experience here. A cheap compressor alternative that I've read about is the Cadillac suspension compressor. I'm not sure what models used them but I think they'll do 95psi. Plumb one of those to a 1 gallon storage tank and you'll be i business. It just might take a while to fill the tank before the horn will be a max performance.

Quoting from the ARB Service Manual...

"...maintains the air pressure ...between 585 kPa and 690 kPa.."

Using the old TI-89.. I get 84.84707657 psi and 100.076039 psi

My mate has a 100 with airlockers on both axles, he has a line from the compressor to the rear of the vehicle. This line acts like a tank and he can get 6 applications of both before he runs out of air. Not a bad way to put in a small air tank and get air at the rear at the same time.

I used to have about 20 feet of air hose connected to a tankless compressor (big red IV). It took a second or two to fill up, then ran the locker several times before refilling. I've since taken that hose out- still seems to work fine, which leads me to believe that you reallly don't need much air reservoir.

Honrs probably need a reservoir if you want anything more than a very little "toot".
There are a couple of places that sell nice, small tanks. Also try a wrecker that has big rigs- look for air brake tanks.

I have talked to ARB about this and they said that 90 psi will do just fine. Not too much, not too little.
