FJ62 HID Conversion?

I'v read the threads for the wiring upgrades, the sylvania lamp upgrade, etc. Has anyone done an HID conversion though, or better question is this possible with the four-eyes since the lamps are one piece and sealed?

Thanks

I have a vague recollection of somebody doing a conversion using honda or acura lamps on a 60. A 62 would be tough since I can't think of any vehicle with square HID reflectors.

That being said, a lot of the good quality lamps have a sharp cutoff. I would think retrofitting HID bulbs/ballasts to an IPF/Cibie/etc lamp would produce good results without blinding other drivers. Probably street legal, but as long as it doesn't effect other drivers it might be worth the effort.

Edit: Maybe it actually was an 80 rather than a 60. Whichever, they used the whole setup from another car.

From what I understand, no HID retrofits are street legal (no matter what the seller tells you) unless you have the proper reflector type AND the leveling mechanism, which essentially none of them have. This allows for the lamp to rotate up or down as needed to keep from blinding oncoming traffic based on the load you have in the rear of the vehicle. That being said, a LOT of people retrofit their cars and don't get in trouble for it.

Someone should try these HID's which are supposed to be a direct plug and play. I just don't want to be the guy who drops $450 for something that doesn't work. I don't know why it wouldn't, though.

I was at the car stereo shop near my folks' place today getting my new clarion installed and brought this up, and if you're using a replaceable bulb type setup (Bosch or Hella E-code H4s and H1s [the high beams]) there is a kit available that's a direct bolt-in setup. The HID bulbs are low/high for the H4s and high output for the H1s. They're available in whatever color temperature you want. I prefer the 4300K because it's a clean white light that doesn't look all gay and blue, but if you drive in alot of rain/mist like in western WA, they recommend the 6000K that put out the blueish light (though the bulb itself is not colored like in the wannabe setups). I can't remember what brand the kits were but these guys will not sell anything that they wouldn't use themselves, and they know their shit. I'll check again tomorrow or the next day if I can make it over and get some more info on the kits.

Pricey though. The kits were about $90 apiece and each bulb is about $100.
