FJ62 PTO winch rating?

Hi guys
I've posted this over in international cruiser tech as well since non-US people prob see alot more of the PTOs but.... I have a FJ62 with factory PTO winch and was wondering what the rating of these are? Ive heard that the pound ratings given to winches may not be comparable since some describe line pull and others absolute hoisting weight? Any idea how my factory 60-series PTO would translate into 'Warn-style' pound units? Thanks.

Hello there!

Just got hold of a PTO and a mech winch. Looked up the Toyota manual and the rating is about 1800 kgs or 4000lbs.

This al depends on the rating of the split pin installed in the front universal joint comming into the vinch. This could be replaced with a stronger. The winch itself is wery powerful with a worm gear principle.

I beleive its about 8000 lbs rolling, which is how Warn measures theirs.

What is this shear pin you guys are talking about?

How is that different from a "failure" pricipal of an electric winch?

IIRC, the factory PTO has a shear pin in one of the drive shafts. It's designed to shear off at a certain load because of the direct connect to the motor. My guess to prevent PTO driveline windup. Sort of a build in safety feature. Electric motors, IIRC, will simply bog down if overloaded and probably have similar but differently designed safety features.

Thanks guys, hmmmm I guess my shear pin must have been upgraded in its life then. I lent a mate of mine my truck and he took it up into the snow and got it stuck. Thinking that the lever inside was a diff lock, he engaged it (actually engaged the winch), revved the hell out of it, coincidentally got out of the foot of fresh snow he was stuck in only too hear a very loud and ugly pop/twang sound. He grudgingly told me about it thinking he had busted some driveline component and I replied "what diff lock?". To his embarassment we checked out the winch and the hook was gone leaving only a frayed piece of heavy duty steel cable. The hook had been attached to the front winch cage/bullbar and had wound onto itself until it broke the line. this cable is pretty scary strong so if the factory winch shear pin is only lightly rated then I guess this means that it must have been changed out in its life.
