FJ62 destruction .. YaBT
Well I hit a speed bump at the local mall trying to get to Cinnabon and the Hello Kitty Trading Card Emporium. Lo and behold my motor fell out.
Luckily we found some bits lying around here and there to use...
So with enough bailing wire and duct tape I could be rolling again in a week.. unfortunately my friend says I have to run french fries or something in it. I do not like the sound of this! Might just run it off a cliff and buy a Suburban Hybrid to be more "green."
While we were figuring out which parts needed bubble gum reinforcement (we have cases of bubble gum lying around being big hello kitty trading card fans!), the dash made a funny noise and blew apart!
spewing parts all over the place...
So we had to go looking for more stuff to fix the destroyed pieces and found a couple usable bits
I just hope nothing else falls off. My jaw is getting tired.

It is actually a .86 A/R, and will probably run it at 10psi. The turbos are on ebay, along with drain setups, fittings, and a machined plate thingamajiggers. Lynchmob is the brains of the outfit, I am the monkey labor when I can be bothered to get up to his shop.
We have been working details out and acquiring parts since about November. The final adapter is going to be built at a local machine shop. LM was going to do it but it would have been a drag on his time (he is busy) and probably wouldn't come out quite the same as from a shop that does this stuff all the time.
Will get some detail shots when it is ready to go. The motor is about ready to drop in for mount fitment save for a couple parts we're waiting on. Should be in and running this weekend. Pedal work isn't too bad to do, though we found that pre-85 bucket and 86-87 are different in that the holes for the master cyl are differently oriented.. and of course I bought a newer cylinder for the older bucket.
Modified my fuel filler neck to remove the gasohol nozzle restricter.. which is kind of a pain in the ass. If I did it again I would just attack it with my air dremel and be done with it. Also had to disconnect the in-tank fuel pump. I am moving the head to my '79 FJ40 so I have some wiring loom cleanup to do after everything is set.

Another weekend, an inch of progress...
first some additional previous weekend shots-
auto vs manual pedal buckets
3rd pedal!
3FE coming out
drivetrain assembled
always good to check that you can shift.. we couldn't, so the rails needed a little alignment (much easier outside the truck!)
gears in really good shape, no rounding or wear anywhere
positioning engine to locate temp mounts
side view of engine.. higher than final position will be
rough position relative to front.. fan position to shroud looks pretty dead on
height shot, a little higher than what it will finally be
motor mount located in final spot
the eagle has landed

My friend doing this is actually trying to do this as a business. I partly went with this over a vortec to give him another build under his belt. This is the 4th one. The last one was a paying customer and if you head over to my build in the Land Cruiser forum on expedition portal, that customer chimed in (12HT/H55 into a 60 series).
Anyways, he currently has a 1PZ, 1HZ, and a 12H-T available, and an HD-T on the way. So if anyone were serious about doing a factory Toyota diesel conversion, here's a guy with great experience, parts sources, and desire to do it. He can get in just about any drivetrain component desired.

Hey Bob!
Yeah the 12H-T was really powerful in the 60 series he did. Went for a ride in it and power just kept coming and coming like a freight train. Turbos are definitely the ticket for the Toyota diesels. I went with the HZ just because it was there and ready to go at the time.
By the way, your HD OME springs are still going strong. Hardly any settling since I've had them and I think we're probably on 9-10 years now? Awesome.

nice nice .. congrats .. you will be really happy with this engine and Turbo .. just try to keep your cooling system as good as you can ..
the 1HZ are great engines but with turbo the IDI setup have some cooling issues ..

The 3FE head stuff is going into my '79 FJ40, the block is probably ripe for a rebuild, and the auto/transfer very likely need rebuilding.

While the cat's away...
(visiting ze Germans Picasa Web Albums - Ken - Germany - drafts)
It reportedly runs and now needs a few things to get it reasonably drivable. I have to do interior stuff, wiring up switches and gauges, and getting started on phase 2 of my work.. mostly finalizing my storage platform and all the stuff related to that.
This weekend the exhaust should be in, turbo oil line in and turbo mounted, some wiring complete for fuel cut, alternator and glow circuit.
I have wagongear.com cargo panels on the way, need to order the RAAMmat sound deadening, and then wait to get in the 40 gallon fuel tank and split rear seats (part of the platform design work). Have a bunch of electronics to install (wait for sound deadening), a tuffy security console, new passenger's door and fender to paint and install. Going to order a Waeco 40qt fridge/freezer and mount it up.
Some phone pics of it a few days ago-
note the fan spinning
so much cleaner without all the vacuum/emissions stuff

Hope you get your 3FE figured out! I was assuming a normally healthy running motor from your post. Stick with the 3FE list for specific wisdom. There are some good people on it as long as you don't get them distracted with beer talk.

Looks nice. I'm a big fan of turbos but more familiar with them on gas engines. What type of numbers do you expect with that garrett? What happens if you run more boost?

The Garrett isn't that much different than what comes on an HD-T. Factory pressure is 7psi and you can go up around 14 without extra cooling. As you boost you increase fuel and try to keep your exhaust temps under 1200F.
I am going to run it at 10psi or less, though lynchmob has been driving it without the turbo the past few days and says the 1HZ has plenty of power without a turbo at all. An HD-T is 30 more hp and about 80ft-lb more torque over an HZ, so the turbo should bring it somewhere in the ballpark of that, though it is a different motor-
HD-T, 165hp@3500, 268ft-lb@2000
1HZ, 135@4000, 187@2200
today's pics-

Great thread on what you can do with this hardware. I think he's using the same turbo I have, but on a pretty upgraded 12H-T

Took some video of it idling today. Missing one turbo connection and no exhaust, but it is smooth.

My camera takes HD video, so if you want to see in full 1920x1080, 40kbps, 30fps H.264 video, get this one (it is 200MB+). Your computer will likely hate you for trying to play it.

I guess an update is due.
I took temporary possession last weekend so I could get some things done down at my shop. I have a list of about 30 things to get done before a trip mid-may.. so maybe 1 thing every day? Dang I did nothing today but buy some Mobil 1 15w-40 and take the old rear driveshaft in to get cut down for a front. Using a 60 series rear DS and it works but is 1/2" too long so I need to get that cut down before working it.
We have an issue in the engine. A clack/rattle that appears in a certain RPM range it seems like. There is some play in the gears that drive the injection pump so it might be we decide to replace them. Researching at the moment.
However! The combo is sweet. I don't have fuel turned up at all and it has plenty of power. Boost, pushed, gets to 9psi. Pyro never gets above 750F, usually it is 450-550F and 650F around 70mph on the freeway. I am in 5th gear at about 40-45mph, and that lasts easily up to 75 (as far as I've dared take it for now). 5th pulls all the normal hills around here but I haven't headed over the mountains. Have a bit to do before a test like that.
Economy-wise, it is starting to look pretty good. I am looking at hitting about 200+ miles where I would normally be at 110 or so, and at one point I was estimating 500-600 miles on the stock tank, where normally I could push it to 300 miles. That seems a little high to me.. about high 20s, so I'm going to see how it works out instead of theorycrafting a number. If I get near 24 (doing mixed driving) I will be ecstatic.
So now I have 2 mornings to get part of a floor covering in and the bench seat so we can go pickup trash in the woods this weekend, then I can plug away at more intricate things- fan shroud, more sound deadner, shifter cover leak, (that noise), maybe start getting work on the rear axle, designing and assembling the rear storage/platform, on and on.
Nothing exciting to see for pics, the only apparent difference is a much larger exhaust pipe and the HJ turbo badge.

The truck sounds great!!
So it took about a month of working on it weekends? Not bad!

I would estimate 3 weekends to pull the motor and do most of the heavy lifting parts. It would have been 2 had we kept the auto, but I feel like I made the right decision going with the H55. However, we started planning back in November and since he'd done a few Toyota diesel conversions in the past, most of the known issues weren't difficult to deal with. A lot of time was remembering everything to order and waiting until parts came in, and then waiting for the shop space to be available.
Honestly by the time we picked a weekend to start, I was preparing for an overseas trip and was pretty worthless with help. I got part of a day in and did a few small necessary things only! Then when I returned I had picked up the month-long cold thing (still have it), and was further worthless to help. That part of this was very frustrating. Distance driving to where the work was being done didn't help either. Anyways, I owe lynchmob a lifetime of beer.

Nice nice. Makes it seem like a 1HZ swap is wicked easy.
The H55 you used had a 10 spline input, correct?
