Electrical problem from Hell
Upon my return from a trip to Utah and back my tail lights failed. The Brake lights, blinkers, and reverse lights still worked. It wasn't the bulbs, the fuse, or the relay. So I pulled the rear panels and started looking over the wiring. YIKES! There were 6 broken wires. I managed to figure out the tail lights and got them re-connected, but now my driver-side brake light doesn't work, neither do the side markers. Looking at it all again today I found that one of the plugs is broken, and on two other plugs wires are breaking and broken. I've hooked them back up the best that I can since they are color coordinated save it's one blue wire that doesn't seem to go to anything. (Maybe a ground?) With still no luck. I still need to check out the trailer light hook-ups for problems, it's next on my list of things to do. It's all a big mess, hard to reach, and falling apart so I figured if I could find a new wiring harness for these tail lights that would probably solve my problem. Anyway, if I can't get it figured out does anyone know where I could get new set? Salvage yard is one place I thought of, but if I could get new, I would. Thank's guys.

Relax, make a plan to fix it all at once and don't sweat it. I have a blue wire in each 1/4 panel on my 90 FJ62, neither goes anywhere. Take it wire by wire. I had three or four cut on either side, it's not that bad.
What do you drive? 60 or 62? What year? I may have some wiring diagrams to help you.

Gabbo,
Where are you located? I have a spare 89 FJ62 harness. I might have the tailight wires but i'd have to check. It might be gone, I can check this weekend.
You need a Toyota FSM (Factory Service Manual.) It will have the wiring schematic and all the color combos to help you sort it out. I hate wiring just as much. It's slow going.
nm, I see Eastern Idaho. FSM or I might be able to mail you a used harness. Or fix yours, you got options.

Oh how you guys rock. It's a 81' FJ60. I do need to get the Toyota Factory Service Manual, any good places I can get one? And I'm located in Rigby, Idaho. I just came back in from looking at it again and I figured out and fixed the Brake light, so now all I need to repair is the side markers. It's barely 20 degrees so I'm forced to take it slow. Randy88FJ62, do you think your spare harness will work? Even if I can get this all repaired I would like to replace it all anyway.

I'm not sure I have it but I will check. I think our tail lights are all the same but that's something we need to confirm first. Call your local Toyota Dealer and they will give you the number of where to order the FSM.

Oooh, Awesome! I will have to get it! And I'll call for the manual tomorow. Still haven't figured out the side markers.

When I called him, CDan gave me the number for Toyota Corp. saying that he'd be happy to sell me one, but that I'd be money ahead to order it direct. If you call that number (it's in someone's sig file around here) you get it for the same price as the dealer and I do not recall there being a shipping charge.

Gabbo, here is a link to several FSM issues, 2mbb sent it to me and I haven't searched through everything on there but there should be something in there for your vehicle. Downloads - Page: 1
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I tried to download one of them but it tells me to try again later. Perhaps that's what I'll have to do.

You can download it using the torrent system, (that little green icon gives you the .torrent file from which to start the download), rather than with the direct download link. The torrent system should give you better access to the files. The ftp server is still running just for those behind quirky and corporate firewalls who can't use torrent, so it's only running a couple of connections on ftp these days. There is some info here regarding torrent if you are unfamiliar with it.
