'87 FJ-60 Horn Problems

Usually I would not worry about the the horn not blowing but with the idiot drivers here in the D.C. Metro area a horn is a must and, more importantly required to be working to pass the Virginia State inspection. I'll try to explain this as best as a I can.

Last year after moving the cruiser from Arizona the horn suddenly stopped working. After reading some posts on Mud discovered, as a suspected, the problem is usually corrosion. I pulled off the steering wheel and cleaned all contacts to include the brass ring on the back of the steering wheel with fine grit sandpaper and isopropyl alcohol. I should mention that this was last winter and until just recently the horn worked perfectly.

Well, low and behold a year later the problem appears again curiously when the temperature remains below freezing ( I don't know if this is a cause). Once again, I pulled off the steering wheel and made sure every connection was clean and making contact. It took some time but when I got everything back together, it still only intermittently blows. I pulled it off a second time and just touched the wires to the ground points in the steering wheel to make sure it was not some sort of other problem and the horn blew at all three contact points. It is back together again and now the horn only seems to blow when the steering wheel is in the straight forward position and not in a turning position.

I should mention that the spring contact that touches the brass ring on the back of the steering wheel is worn but not enough to not make contact. As an extra measure to ensure contact I placed small washers behind the brass ring to insure it would make contact with the spring. I did this last year and had no problems until now... Could it be that the washers are causing the problem?

Does anyone have any ideas or had a similar problem with the horn?

I have always found it to be those small contacts or the other contact down in the column which feeds them. HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Mike

Please keep posting on this. I have one doing this. Will work only when the steering wheel is in certain places. Photos of solution would be wonderful.

I had a similar problem of intermittent horn. Not to state the obvious, but the screws fastening the face of the steering wheel to the body of the steering wheel were loose. Haven't had any issues since tightening them.

I also had particulate debris indicating wear of the plunger upon the contacting ring. Out of curiosity, I did not clean or roughen anything but left it as is. No problems there, either.

Thanks for the replies. I will shim the ring again with two sets of washers tomorrow and will post pictures if it works. Come to think of it, the inside of the steering wheel had some brass dust collected in the bottom portion of the wheel. I think the spring may be too worn to make contact and is in need of replacement. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow... The Cruiser Dan replacement parts option may be the only option. I'll post a picture of the shim job if t works.

The parts from the dealer are cheap, maybe $10 total. Not dissing CDan, since he's saved my butt a few times. But if the dealer is close by, you save freight and possibly time.

In my case, I replaced the horn ring and the horn pin. Fixed the problem. Yes, use the dielectric grease...

i just ordered the part from Cdan - it was like 5-6$ for the replacement pin. He did not have the contact ring and said it's rarely needed.

So those of you that did this - did you replace the ring as well or...? and why? Cdan said it was due to the pin wearing down, very common. So a new, longer pin, with fresh spring should fix even if the contact ring is worn a bit - right?

This is my next quick project, while installing new hella supertone horns.
