Cool. Do you think running this setup without a swaybar would be a wise idea?

Once I get the truck on the road Ill play around with sway bars. I have the oem 80 bars on now. I think its always a good idea to run a sway bar, never know when you'll need to do a quick swerve. I think Ill end up with some antirock style bars.

Seems like a good time to mention Speedway Engineering's line of totally adjustable & configurable line of swaybars. Note that they're in Sylmar, CA

HOLY ! I haven't ventured into this thread for a while. Looking damn good man! I love the blacked out 80 wheels, though I don't know if the tires you picked will have good road manners
When's the maiden voyage expected?

bumps
I think the air bumps are suposed to give you a more progressive stop so a kind of emergency shoch absorber.Instead of the axel hitting a solid lump of rubber it comes to a softer stop.On the IH8MUD home page there is an article about parabolic leaf springs on their site there is some pics and info on all bumps .Hope this helps.
P.S thank you for the hj porn ,coil springs are one of my fantasys!

This is a very cool mod, I have been dreaming about this on my 88 FJ62.
Nice!

It lives! First test drive was last night. Ended up having to tow it home lol. The alternator wasn't charging. Well I got that figured out and went for a short drive today. Its not yet registered so I didn't go far but I can already tell that the ride is going to be very nice. Everything feels tight and I really like that the 80 steering box is a lot quicker. Also, I cannot even feel the tires, they are quite and drive very smooth, we'll see how I feel once I get it up to highway speed. Ill get it out more as soon as my reg. stickers arrives. Im really looking forward to getting dirty. Heres a few pictures of it in the driveway.

Having a hard time deciding on black or silver for the wheels. I always wanted black, but side to side I might like the silver. What do you think?

If you don't mind, could you guess what the start to finish cost of this project was? I am very interested in doing this to my 62 eventually.

To be honest, I purposely haven't added up all my receipts for this project. Although, I can tell you the cost (minus both axles and suspension from the 80) was around the same as what I spent for my SOA six years ago, (high steer, cut&turn, shocks, all that stuff).
If you can find the axles for a reasonable price, this is defiantly a cost effective swap.

This one truly looks amazing! Great work. Stick with the BLACK wheels!
I can't wait to get my fj80 axle under my rig with some links.

I vote for the silver wheels! Or paint the inner sections black like the 40th Anniversary cruisers (I think it was 40th)
Awesome work dude.
Whats up with the un-matching mirrors and only one tail light guard?
I just like to point things out
Again awesome, awesome. I love the fender cuts too

The silver may win. Something about it just looks right.
Obviously I still have a lot of work to do. The larger mirrors were cheap after-market ones and the passenger side glass fell out on the freeway and I haven't replaced it. The taillight guard just hasn't been put back on yet.
Thanks for the props.

Nothing to extreme(no front drive shaft yet) just a nice ride out on a local trail. I had a couple minor issues, but the ride is smooth and the everything seems nice and tight. I left both sway bars on as well. I'm already considering options for lower tcase gearing. I'll start a new thread on it, but what are my options for lowers gears in my stock split case thats behind the 4l60e? I'd like to just swap gears or a direct replacement case. I want the last amount of work possible, haha. What about an 80 case?

Still two sets of wheels, two sets of mirrors,
Honestly though, this completely changes the direction I want to take my rig. That's right about the height I want with COILS!!!

Yeah yeah, just cosmetic things. Right now I just wanted to drive it, it's been far too long. I'll get the cosmetic stuff out of the way next week.

That is sweet! I wish I would have seen this build before I did my SOA. Just happened there was a 80 series for sale here that wasnt street legal for $1800. Cant wait to see pics of it on the trails.

A couple more tech questions:
Did you end up using 2.5" springs or the stock 80 springs?
For the rear links, did you use 80 links or custom links?

The front is running 2" Ironman lift springs and the rear has stock front 80 coils. I'd like to find a slightly stiffer spring for the rear without gaining any lift. Maybe a 4 Runner lift spring? Air bags? Custom coil? Any ideas?
Links are all custom. 36" lowers and 30" uppers. Don't remember the tubing I used but its all DOM sleeved with DOM, I have NO worries of them ever bending.

If I remember correctly, OME offers a stock height/increased load spring for the 80s.

why not OME stock height in the rear .. ?
You have several options .. if you have the 1.96:1 t-case gear set .. you can swap for a 2.48:1 gear set from a 62 ( auto tranny ) or buy the marks low gear set .. that have great reduction in iHI range along as 3.05:1 Low ..

I haven't been able to find a stock height replacement Got a link? I'm also concerned that the springs I have on now may be sagged being that the are 14 years old. So even a stock hight replacement would give me some lift that I don't want?
Thanks for the info on tcase gears. What years had the 1.96:1/2.48:1? Would it make for much of a reduction and are the gears a direct swap? I checked out the marks gears set. Very expensive!
