oil pan and gasket
well i replaced the oil pan gasket once and it leaked pretty bad on the corners where the bearing caps are. it has been a few years since i replaced a op gakset and that was on my 74 F motor and i didnt' have any problems with that. this time i didn't pay that much attiention to it when i put it on but only to the bolt holes to make sure they linged up. I bought a new gasket and compaired it to the one i put on and its the same and then i fit it on the oil pan and in the corners it dont quite fit like i think it should. its sticks up in the corners almost 1/2" Is this normal?

Where did you get the gasket? That doesn't look right.

There are two versions of oil pans and two versions of gaskets. I think that if you get the newer oil pan, it'll fit this gasket better. I would call up Cruiser Dan and ask him about it. I recently got a new oil pan from him (200+bux) and the gasket seemed to fit ok.

Man, that looks off by a mile. I wonder if you could cut a section out of the middle of the curved part and glue it back together with High Tack to make it fit?

That's the correct part number for the 2F engine. There was a part change in '84, but the old part is superseded by the new part.

cutting it is an option but i really dont want to.
and 2mbb is correct there is only one gasket now. the guy at the dealership looked up both pans because of notes in the computer and came up with the same part number.

That's what mine looked like when I did it a few months ago. It was a pain to keep it lined up, but it seemed to go in fine.
I used a brand new gasket from Toyota as well.

I'm with wengejor
I changed mine about 3-4 years ago, and the dealership had both gaskets in stock at that time and let me take them home to check them (still in the bags of course). I agonized over which one since they were soooo close to being exactly the same... IIRC, the 'new' gasket also came along with a slight pan change. so to continue my story, the motor in my 60 is a 10/85 and I replaced the pan in oh...91 or so...new pan. so the 'new' gasket fit mine real well. HTH.

Your oil pan looks nice. When I first bought my truck, I changed the oil and then decided to go wash all of the gunk off of the bottom of the engine at the car wash. I washed the truck and then blasted the underside to get rid of the gunk...then took it for a spin to dry it off. The next morning I was going to take the truck to work and all of the oil drained out into the driveway. That gunk I blasted away was holding together my rusty oil pan. Had to get the wife to drive me in because the 60 was blocking the rabbit in the garage. That really sucked.
I actually painted the new pan because the Toyota paint sucks and I also used some caulk around the skid plate so that no water can sit in the cracks.

it looks good because i scraped about a 1/4" build up of oil and dirt off of it. and cleaned it with laquir thinner.

I know the Felpro gasket comes in 4 pieces so I doubt there would be any problem cutting the gasket. I used the Felpro and did not have any problems with it leaking so long as you put a good dab of black rtv in the corners.

Personally, I would stuff it in there and see how it goes. Keep an eye on it for a little while and if it starts leaking, then get a different gasket. That's just my opinion.

call up cruiser dan and see if he has any of the older style gaskets around. As stated before, the old gaskets come with 4 parts....two bearing caps and two side gaskets. Are you sure that you got all of the original bearing cap gasket out of the grooves? It took me quite some time to get it all out when I did mine. It was real hard and I had to chip it apart.

The multiple piece gaskets were replaced several years ago.
The 12151-61010 is for the original pans. The 12151-61011 is for the current number replacement pan and for the 3FE pans.
There should be a couple paint marinkgs on the gasket. Are they blue or red?

Not if it had had the oil pan replaced with the new number pan. It would then use a 12151-61011.

There is a slight difference in the arch. I do not recall exactly what it is and I'm not in the office at the moment. I also don't remember which color goes with which gasket. I can look tomorrow and find out. It is possible that the gasket is mis-labeled but untill I look at the ones I have in stock I can't say. I also stock the current pan and I can set both gaskets in it and see how they fit.

I have a new 12151-61011 in the garage, and I also have two or three sets of the 4 piece gaskets. We could compare the two Toyota pieces on your pan.

OK, that confirms my memory. The blue gasket is for the early original pan.

well after me and brian (exrsa1) matched up gaskets. his 4 piece fits perfect for the pan which is by far smaller than the 2 new toyota gaskets. well i got home and tried the journal pieces on the block and they are too small so by process of elimination how ever it happend i have the wrong oil pan. so i will be going to the dealer tomorrow and getting one along with the gasket.

Are you positive that you have all of the old journal gasket material chipped out of the grooves?
How could you end up with a bogus oil pan?

I have no idea how these gaskets don't fit on this pan. We have both the toyota gaskets, plus the 4 piece. The 4 piece fits the pan, but not the block, and the one piece fits the block and not the pan. Not sure what to make of it. I have not seen the block, but have no reason to believe the gasket was not removed properly.

I just remember having to use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to get all of the old gasket out of the journal groove. It should be a nice rectangular cross section that goes around the journal and the gasket should squeeze in there tightly.
