Ok well some updates. I had the carb rebuilt by Mark at Mark's Off Road, here's the write up:

Oh and that alternator issue? Get this....

I finally check it tonight after I install the carb. The battery is holding at around 12.4 but the alternator only produces 6v at ~600 RPM and only 12v at ~2000 RPM. So the truck is starting no problem but if I turn on anything electrical, the voltage drops back down to 6-7v. So ok I figure no biggie, I'll bug Georg about sending me the spare he has. Meanwhile I go take my son and grab some food. While I am driving the CHARGE lihgt keeps coming on and stalls everytime I have to slow down or come to a stop. OK. So I gun it home to keep the RPMs. I keep the RPMs up at the stop light. As soon as I turn the corner of my street... SMOKE starts billowing out from under the hood of my truck. DAMMIT!!!!

I turn off the truck and coast into a parking spot. Pop the hood and let the smoke clear out. Its not an oil fire. Its smells like burning plastic. I inspect. Can't find anything obvious. Then I started smelling to see if I can find the culprit. At this time I am thinking that I ROYALY screwed up the carb install. But I couldn't have. It was too easy. Too cut and clean.

It was the alternator. I checked the back and the whole thing was black on the back side. I smelled it. OH YEAH, there it is. Thats the culprit. I yanked off the alternator and it sits on my bench. Then I started testing the electrical system to see if it friend anything. I turn on the lights. Check. Warning lights. Check. Annoying seat belt buzzer. Check. One by one I check the fuses. Check and check. I check the alt cables to see if there is any burned spots or warm wires or if there is even any continuity. All check out fine.

I may have dodged a bullet and my issue is JUST the alt.

So uh Georg, when you get this if you could uh, help a brotha out

Oh and I have your carb core!! It just needs to air out before I can ship it.

The stuff he used was called Morton Defender, which is a two part epoxy. The two part epoxy takes scrapes better, but doesn't deal with impacts as well as the rubber style bedliner sprays. If he had to do it again, he'd do the epoxy style on the exterior, and use the rubber stuff for the inside of the bed.

There's two ways to apply it, either rolling it on (similar to what Dylan did to his lower panels on his 60, though I think he used a different product), or spraying it on. We sprayed his on. The two-part epoxy didn't require breathing apparatus, but just the same, you didn't really want to be downwind of it. He got a shutz(?) gun, which is used for spraying bedliners, but to screw it onto the jars for the defender, the bottom part of the tube had to be filed down a bit. The gun was something like $20. We had just a touch too much wind which affected coverage, and you really want to be spraying this with it HOT out, as the epoxy won't cure as fast with it hot, and will blend better.

It took something like two gallons to do his pickup - an 85 xtra cab hilux - inside the bed, and the entire outside. His truck has rubber mats inside from the factory, so the inside was left alone. I think he said it cost somewhere between $100-150, but am not quite positive. He just searched online and found a place that sold it with free shipping. We didn't do any serious prep work other than scuffing the paint, and body work (rust repair) that was bare metal or bare bondo got a coat of etching primer. The badges (Toyota, EFI, etc) he used a dark grey can of rustoleum hammered to paint somewhat to match the texturing.

Morton is owned by US Chemicals and Plastics, based out of Ohio somewhere. He said their tech line was very helpful. He had seen a CJ done with herculiner but didn't like the way it turned out, and a friend used gator guard, but gator guard had a very rough texture for some reason, so he stayed away from it.

Don't have many pictures of the truck in its current form, but a frontal shot is available at http://www.punk.net/~kevin/mortonhilux.jpg
If you came along on the FJ-45 run earlier this month, it was parked next to my rusty green 60 along the creek. I can try to get some better pics if you want, PM me your address.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Next time, nag me

Well I got the alternator from Georg and I used this as an opportunity to teach my wife how to change it. All I needed to do was to break free the bolts and I talked her through 100% of the rest. Its cool. She is really interested in car stuff and is always looking for ways to help out and learn. It took her all of 25 mins to remove the old and replace with the old (er...new to me )

So it works fine. Taught her about the battery and the charging system. Taught her how to use a voltmeter. Everything was going extremely well.

Then we go for a test drive. Drove around the block. Started hearing a nasty noise. Pulled over. Checked the belts. It sound like the belts were slipping. I checked the alt belt and it was fine, good tension.

Aha, the smog pump belt is too loose. Hmm, how did that happen? We didn't even touch it. Well that was because the smog pump completely seized. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh this just keeps getting better and better.

If you don't want to buy a rebuilt, there's a guy in Camarillo who will rebuild with OEM parts... At least he did when I emailed him a year ago. I think maybe $125 ?

wow, nothing but good luck with that rig, huh?!

i don't remember if that was the original smog pump off the rig or not. i might have one at the shop, will take a loo for you tomorrow. if not, then i'd highly recommend getting one rebuilt with the oem parts, not the aftermarket junk.

also, make sure you clear all the debris out of the smog hoses. it can and will work its' way into the engine possibly causing major engine damage. seen it before.......

Good to know. I am thinking I will just get a cheap used one at Spectre and call it a day. I'm trying not to go too nuts with the engine stuff because my wife and I have been talking back and forth about doing an engine swap. She wants to do it , I don't

Great thread. Had I posted up a similar story, there probably would have been a massive pile on and cut-downs.

As for this photo...

Aside from it being all Cruiser (sort of), it is just wrong in so many ways. 40 pulling a trailer with a 60 carcass on it... FJ "Cruiser" being the most built up... Just an Cruiser existential mind-fuk.

I've been so busy with stuff that I haven't bothered with it just yet. My wife's best friend is begging me to let her go after them because she is just so pissed on what this kid did. She's an attorney and loves go after people. Her specialty is fraud.

Still 100% plan on pursuing it purely on principle. This idiot didn't even try to make good so let him suffer.

Ok well an update. I made the very first off road trip in the 60. You can see the small write up and pics from that excursion here:
IH8MUD Forums - View Single Post - Saline Valley Trip: 11th through weekend

What I have done so far is have the carb rebuilt by Mark's Off Road:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...stall-how.html

Ran into a problem because I didn't actually rebuild my own:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...crew-carb.html

Got the side panels from WagonGear:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/merchandise-...hatches-4.html

Stripped out the interior. Got ideas for rhino lining and pricing:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...e-my-60-a.html

Need to get the CB installed. Working on getting 4" shackle and spring lift. Looking into getting some new tires and wheels. Looking to spend not a lot of money

There are tons of plans but money is in the way right now. I've learned there are things I REALLY need to do to get it road worthy. Mainly getting the same gear into the 60 that I have in the 80.

Just did a tune up on the truck. I do not own a timing gun yet so I can't check/set timing for it. BUT I just changed out the cap, rotor, wires and plugs. What came out was all non-OEM trash. The cap and rotor are probably usable for spares. The wires were 7mm vs 8mm. The plugs were Bosch copper. Now the plugs themselves were completely black with a heavy fuel smell and the gap was set at almost .060".

I changed with all OEM stuff from SOR. The plugs are now ND with a set gap of . 032". The wires are a big difference. The ones that came out of the truck were really long and just crappy. The new ones are really short and fit exactly as they should. Antisieze on the threads and dieelectric grease on the boots.

I also just scraped and scrubbed all the windows and treated them with Rain-X and anti-fog for the interior.

I found I have a nasty exhaust leak. I need to track that bad boy down but my guess would be exhaust manifold.

Ok a few updates. Time and money have prevented anything major. Took it on its first off road adventure (at least since I've had it) and went to Saline Valley in Death Valley. I was FAR more comfortable in my stripped out 60 then the other two guys in their open top 40s

I finally installed Wagon Gear's side panels and went with drilling out the tack welds instead of cutting off the brace.

I also got a rebuilt trans, yes its a 4spd, and transfer from a truck that I helped Mark's Off Road take the engine out of. No idea how long ago the trans/transfer was rebuilt BUT Mark took a look at everything and it seems to be ok except for two things:

1. They didn't use the gaskets when putting both inspections plates back on, just used blue RTV.
2. The cap where the speed-o-cable comes out is coming out the top instead of at 11 0'clock.

Everything else looks very clean and NOT worn inside. Mark drove it before I got t here and said everything was quiet and shifted smooth. Unlike my pile of crap.
