question abaut the hubs please

I was fixing the breaks on my fj62, so I had it in 4 stands. I locked the hubs and put the truck in 4h to inspect the 4wd system, everything is working fine so I put it back in 2h and free the hubs.
With the hubs on free position I put it in 4h again and the front tires started spinning, is this normal? I always thought the free hubs means free spinning you will see the driveshaft moving but no the tires.
If my hubs are locking up all the time I want to fix it right away, any opinion will be appreciated.

did you hold the tire while turning the powertrain? they will float a bit, but you should be able to grab the tire and stop it.

in 4hi and hubs free, the front shaft should spin, but the tires shouldn't. have you had your hubs apart recently?

they're pretty simple, and one might just be sticking a bit.

It seems to me if they were broken internally they would fail where you couldn't get them to lock, because the internals were trashed. and it would sound horrible when you spun it.

simple explanation - Theres a spring inside the hub that moves the teeth of the hub on and off a spindle when you turn it from free to locked, and if theres not enought lube grease in there, the spring would not be able to move it.

They don't break very easily.

And a real common mistake is to much grease...which would cause the lock in lock outs to stick or drag whatever you wish to call it.

It means that the clean grease that is supposed to be in there is probably sludge. Do a search on hubs. There are plenty of good pictures showing an exploded view and a few threads on how to rebuild them. It is within your ability.

Keep asking questions and we'll get you to where you need to be.

very simple to pull them off and clean them.

One bananna job

Bout $40 worth of tools if you do not have any.

BTW, if your hubs are gummed up. You most likely need to do a whole knuckle job. That is not hugely tough either but does take some special tools (one big ass socket specificly)

When you get it apart, find out what is wrong and start putting them back together make sure you get your bearing preload, and jamnut specs correct or the drivers side jam nut can back off and fuse the hub together. (PO did this to mine)

If you need to clean it, it's just a matter of using a 10 mil socket and removing the 6 bolts from the outer most cap of the locking hub. The inner (large chrome ) section just houses the hub gear. The outer cap houses the movable mechanism. Pull that, clean it up really good, maybe scrape out the crud on the chrome hub section, re-grease, and throw it back together.

I'd say max of 15 mins. each side from start to finish, and that's with a thorough cleaning.

What ever you do, don't buy NEW Aisin hubs. They are something like $250-$300 a piece. You can always find good used ones but even if cleaning doesn't fix yours, I'm sure you can get a replacement spring.
